Yesterday, Complex magazine published “Crash Course”, a lengthy feature about former-teen-superstar-now-mature-solo-artist Nick Jonas. The piece, written by Kerensa Cadenas, touches on growing up, career beginnings, his current music and acting career, sexuality, future ventures, and more.
Here are ten things we learned about Nick Jonas from the interview.
1. He feels free.
When asked if he feels trapped in life, Jonas replied that he feels “really free.” He elaborates: “[I feel] the most free in my life that I’ve ever been. Career-wise I don’t feel trapped. I feel great. As far as me, Nick, as a person, I feel the most free.” He adds that this new version of free Nick is more fun to be around.
2. His initial experience with fame as a young teen made him nervous.
Nick Jonas started his career young: he was discovered in a hair salon at six, performed on Broadway as a child, then moved on to starring in the Camp Rock movies with Disney. The singer said that this new found fame made him nervous due to the pressure for perfection. He mentions some bizarre (to say the least) interactions with crazed fans that didn’t help the cause. For instance, Jonas found a mother/daughter duo in his dressing room one day whom he’s never seen or me before, and he also received a dead baby shark in the mail intended for him and his brothers.
3. He’s a huge Shania Twain fan.
Nick Jonas gushes about one of his biggest influences: Shania Twain. He also admitted that she was one of his early celebrity crushes. When the Canadian songstress followed him back on Twitter, Jonas said he felt in that moment that he really made it.
4. He isn’t trying to gay bait.
Nick Jonas has attracted quite a passionate fan base, which includes the the gay community. But he’s not exploiting or consciously making an effort to gain the gay community as fans. He said that it frustrates him that people think he gay baits. “As a heterosexual male, [I am] open and comfortable about loving my fan base, gay or straight, because to me there is no difference, it is my fan base. Your sexual preference does not matter to me and it shouldn’t matter to anybody. I thought [the criticism] was kind of dumb, considering I play this gay character on a gritty show. There’s a gay sex scene. I kissed a man,” Jonas retorts.
5. He strongly stands for acceptance.
Nick Jonas’ sexuality has been picked apart by people since he’s a male celebrity in the public eye. He discusses that people comment on his sexuality because he’s played gay characters for roles, even having a gay sex scene in Scream Queens. While he admits to being heterosexual, Jonas said that it shouldn’t matter to anyone what someones sexual preference is, and it doesn’t matter to him. He said: “The goal is acceptance on all levels – that should be the focus.” He also said that equality is an important issue for him since he’s been exposed the the gay community from a young age by way of his theatre background.
6. He’s currently putting the finishing touches on a new album.
While a re-release of Nick Jonas dropped last November, which included the new single Levels, Nick Jonas is in the final stages of putting a new album together. It also features a collaboration with Purity Ring’s Corin Roddick. Nick Jonas hasn’t released a brand new album since 2014 so he’s had the year to grow emotionally, vocally, and instrumentally. He dishes, “I think personal life and career have to kind of line up in the sense that my career has changed so dramatically,” Jonas continues, “and then I think I had some catching up to do.” The album will be released on Safehouse Records, the label that he co-founded with fellow musician and BFF, Demi Lovato, and their manager Phil McIntyre.
7. There’s a song on the upcoming album about an ex-girlfriend.
Chainsaw is one of the new tracks by Nick Jonas that’s on the album he’s working on. It’s about his breakup with Olivia Culpo and showcases a vulnerable side of himself. Also, the majority of the album was recorded at the Jonas’ house, a place where he found solace during the breakup.
8. He’s frustrated in how the music industry measures success.
This frustration he feels is the reason for the creation of Safehouse Records.”[The way success is measured] can be exhausting, just because I really care quite a bit. I’m working toward caring less actually,” he said, “The world of music is changing so dramatically every day, the way people hear music. It’s different. It’s a new day and requires new thinking.” He and Demi see the label as a means of protecting their creativity and careers, since they’ve felt defenseless and unsafe before. Jonas also shares his excitement in signing/developing new artists to the label. “I’ve learned so much over my career,” he said,”I certainly haven’t learned it all and don’t feel like I know it all, but enough to help someone else who is starting out.”
9. He has a wonderful partnership with Jay-Z.
Nick Jonas values Jay-Z’s advice and wisdom. He mentions that he wants to have a “quality stamp” on everything he does and that he spent the day with the rapper at Made In America festival last summer. Jonas added that if he’s in need of advice, he’ll turn to Jay. “I’ll throw things off him when things come up, music-wise, or when trying to come up with a name for the tour,” he said, “The partnership already is great.”
10. He’s a gentleman.
When asked if he’s having sex with Kate Hudson during the interview (rumors of them hooking up are plaguing the internet), according to the piece, he laughed and responded with, “You’re allowed to ask me whatever the f*** you want and I’ll answer it, or not.” He declined to answer out of respect for Kate Hudson’s privacy. Jonas describes their relationship as an “unbelievable connection” and that they “see something in each other that’s beautiful.”
You can soon see Nick Jonas on the Future Now tour with partner-in-crime Demi Lovato, soon. The tour kicks off on June 24 in Sunrise, Florida.
