11 Predictions For This Year’s Coveted Song Of The Summer

summersongsheader

It’s a debate that happens every year: what will be the Song Of The Summer? The ubiquitous hit that will be blaring from cars, played at every party and, heck, probably even soundtrack your trips to the grocery store. The one song people will somehow know all the words to by the time fall comes around because it subconsciously buried itself into your mind like the pesky/amazing earworm it is. Remember Iggy Azalea and Charli XCX’s Fancy last year? Of course you do. As the weather heats up, so does the competition for this coveted title.

The staff here have such diverse taste in music that we can devote hours to this discussion and still not have a unanimous answer (at least not yet), so instead of fighting it out, we’ve all laid out our personal picks for Song of the Summer below. Grab a pair of sunglasses and dancing shoes for the catchy numbers. Take a look and share your summer anthem picks with us at @Much or in the comments below now!

The Weeknd – Can’t Feel My Face
My pick for the song of the summer is definitely The Weeknd’s Can’t Feel My Face. It’s a huge change for the Toronto artist who is known for his smooth and trance-inducing R&B slow jams. I’ll admit that I was a little hesitant when I first heard the title and I’m still not sure I’m in love with it, but I’m definitely in love with the song. It’s catchy, it’s instantly memorable, it’s got serious MJ vibes and it makes me want to dance. What more can you ask for in a song of the summer? – Allison Bowsher, Much

Don’t miss The Weeknd’s performance at the 2015 MMVAs on Sunday, June 21!

Nicki Minaj featuring Beyoncé – Feeling Myself
With a perfect “blare from your rolled down windows” beat and insanely quotable lyrics, this song is an ideal summer pump up anthem. There has never been a more effective way to get ready for a first date, a job interview or going bathing suit shopping than singing, “I’m feeling myself” over and over again. Well…at least not since we were all shouting “Bow down, bitches” along with Bey. – Jessica Ford, Much

Major Lazer & DJ Snake feat. MØ – Lean On
Someone to lean on is exactly what you’ll need when you’re done dancing your summer nights away to this electronic track. MØ’s sharp vocals make it impossible to not sing along – a solid addition to the Major Lazer and DJ Snake collab. Bonus: the clean version of the song swaps the lyric, “fire a gun” for “into the sun,” giving it extra street cred in the running to becoming the song of SUNmer. – Cherylann Nesbitt, MTV

Jamie xx feat. Young Thug & Popcaan – I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times)
“I know there’s gonna be good times” is practically a summer mantra, a phrase that is meant to be repeated with optimistic enthusiasm at rooftop parties, music festivals, even in your PJs. This is what makes Jamie xx’s feel-good anthem, off of his phenomenal new album In Colour, such a strong contender for song of the summer. With its breezy steel drum synths and undeniable swagger provided by Young Thug and Popcaan, I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times) embodies everything summer’s supposed to be. – Melody Lau, Much

Walk The Moon – Shut Up And Dance
The newest walk the moon album is super summer dance party. Shut Up and Dance or We Are The Kids will definitely be the song of the summer. – Nadia Dar, Much

Maurice Moore – #mygirl
Maurice is currently making a name for himself in the R&B industry. The track is hot because the raps and vocals he puts down in the song are… just fire. The beat puts you in a good mood and it’s very summer-like, it just makes you want to play the song loud with your windows down. – Myron Mayne, Much

Alessia Cara – Here
Alessia is 18 and already cooler than I can ever hope to be. I plan on blasting this song at every house party that I don’t want to be at, then grabbing my friends and running into the balmy summer night. – Hilary Allan, MTV Fora

We Came As Romans – The World I Used To Know
My song of the summer is definitely The World I Used To Know by We Came as Romans. It’s the band’s first release since 2013 and they teased it on Instagram, dropped the track and a new album announcement on the same day. They’re an amazing band, and they’ll be on the Vans Warped Tour all summer (and releasing the album mid-tour), so the new song is the perfect teaser for this summer’s setlist. – Shante Allen, MTV

Tove Lo – Talking Body
I didn’t want to vote for this song. There are many cooler songs to vote for, but the title of ‘Song of the Summer’ has never been about being cool. It’s about encapsulating the days ranging from June 21 to September 22 in a cheesy myriad of sounds. Risqué lyrics? Check. Is it catchy? Sure is! Talking Body has all the necessary elements of a post-millennial, ‘Song of the Summer’. So if we’re talkin’ songs of summer, look no further. – Kyle Coulter, MTV Proto

Carly Rae Jepsen – Emotion
The explosive success of Call Me Maybe mistakenly branded Carly Rae Jepsen as a one-hit wonder. Her debut album Kiss remains one of the most underrated albums of all time (OF ALL TIME). If this title track (and the artwork!) is any indication of what the album is going to be like, I anticipate the album is going to be filled with ‘80s inspired BANGERS. For this reason, Emotion is my pick. I’ll be playing this track on repeat for the next few months. CRJ forever. – Celina Torrijos, MTV Fora

Don’t miss Carly Rae Jepsen’s performance at the 2015 MMVAs on Sunday, June 21!

Unlimited Bullets – Blue Jays (team and bird)
I don’t listen to anything I haven’t made myself so my summer pick is my rockin’ tribute to Toronto’s blue jays, feathered and non-feathered alike. It’s the perfect track to put on while you’re out in the backyard throwing the ball around while keeping an eye on the area’s nests. Let’s go Blue Jays! – Glenn Macaulay, The Comedy Network
