2015: The Year In Justin Bieber

Year of Biebs

It was a year that started off with a heartfelt apology and ended with Bieber singing Sorry to all the fans he had left down during his rebellious three years off the rails and in the headlines. In 2015, we saw Bieber get ripped, get roasted, and get real about music again. Here’s 2015 according to Justin Bieber.

Justin Bieber kicked off 2015 on a sexy note when he was announced as the new face, abs, and bum of Calvin Klein underwear. We weren’t complaining. Bieber looked great and we got to two weeks of Kate McKinnon hilariously spoofing the ads on SNL.

January also marked the official beginning of Bieber’s Apology/Comeback Tour. The singer appeared on The Ellen Show to tell fans how sorry he was for his behaviour over the past three years and later posted an even longer monologue on his Facebook page. Was it too late now to say sorry? Nope.

After a tumultuous three years, Justin released his comeback single Where Are Ü Now with Skrillex and Diplo on the production duo’s new album, Jack Ü. Justin’s longtime manager Scooter Braun posted about the song on his Instagram page, saying “@skrillex @diplo and @justinbieber – #jacku #whereareUnow . Justin wrote this song in the studio one night just vibin out…I ran into wes aka Diplo at a club and told him I had this great song and vocal by JB and we were figuring out what to use it for. He said can we hear it for jack u. The rest is history. Enjoy. #music.” We did enjoy, with the song dominating most of 2015 and setting the tone for Bieber’s fourth studio album, Purpose.

It was the roast felt round the world. In an attempt to atone for his bad behaviour, Bieber decided to put himself at the mercy of some of today’s biggest comics and entertainers for his own Comedy Central Roast. The event was equal parts funny and painful. Frankly, we were as relieved as the Biebs when it was done.

Justin appeared on the cover of Men’s Health Magazine for their April 2015 issue and continued to display his ‘grown up’ physique.

Bieber returned to the stage in May to play some of his old tracks as well as his new hit Where Are Ü Now at Wango Tango in LA. The Biebs debuted a new hairstyle and some new dance moves at the concert event.

The superstar also returned to the red carpet, attending the annual Met Gala in New York.

There wasn’t much action on the Bieber front this past June, so we’re going to throw it back to Bieber’s super-cute appearance at the 2012 MMVAs on June 17.

Marking the start of his countdown phase that we would see throughout the rest of 2015, Bieber posted his first countdown pic for What Do You Mean on July 29. The singer then enlisted the help of celebrities to mark the days leading up to the single’s release. That’s one impressive contact list.

Bieber kicked off August by announcing the album release date for Purpose and sending Beliebers into full countdown mode for November 13.

After releasing a lyric video early in the month that followed professional skateboarder Ryan Sheckler around LA, Bieber switched things up for the official What Do You Mean? video and got sexy. Only one day after making his official comeback performance at the MTV VMAs and debuting his new bleached blond hair, the singer dropped his video for What Do You Mean?. Bieber, John Leguizamo and model Xenia Deli starred in the video, which focused on a mysterious deal Bieber and Leguizamo make before the pop star joins Deli in a hotel room. The onscreen couple go on to strip down and make out in some of the steamiest scenes we’ve ever seen Bieber in, but the scenes are cut short when two masked men come in and kidnap them. Boo to bad guys.

Bieber sat down with Complex Mag in September to give one of his most intimate, revealing, and self-aware interviews yet. “I’ve made myself so unrelatable the past year with all the stuff that I was doing. Not even bad stuff sometimes, just outrageous stuff. Like, you got a monkey, what are you doing?” We asked ourselves that a few times, Biebs.

When you’re staging one of the biggest comebacks of the year, a nude pic can either be really good or really bad. For Justin Bieber, the paparazzi pic of the singer naked on vacation in Bora Bora ended up being a flash in the pan news story that really didn’t affect upcoming album sales. What did have an impact was Bieber’s new single and video for Sorry, which captivated fans and had non-Beliebers converting.

Purpose is finally released on November 13 and beats out One Direction’s Made In The AM to be the highest selling album that day, also breaking records set by Drake and The Beatles. Teaming up with choreographer Parris Goebel, Bieber releases music videos for all 13 tracks off Purpose.

The Purpose promo train comes to an abrupt halt when the singer cancels a handful of shows and appearances near the end of the month. Though no reason is given, we think it’s great that Bieber is choosing to decrease his commitments rather than risk more public meltdowns, which earlier in the month included walking off stage mid-show.

Bieber came home for the holidays and played his annual acoustic show in Toronto in December to raise money for local food shelters. The singer also debuted a new neck tattoo around the same time, likely hoping his philanthropic work will make us forgive his poor ink decisions.
