Beyoncé leads the pack for tonight’s MTV VMAs with an incredible 11 nominations, so it only makes sense that the superstar would be in attendance to pick up some possible hardware, right? What makes even more sense is having Beyoncé hit the stage and perform, which is exactly what she’s going to do.
Just announced, Beyoncé will be performing at tonight’s MTV VMAs, airing live starting at 9E/6P from Madison Square Gardens in New York City.
Beyoncé already has an incredible 16 VMAs and with 11 nominations tonight, so there’s a good chance she’s going to be making room in her trophy case. Thanks to the release of her groundbreaking sixth solo album Lemonade this year, Beyoncé continues to push the music industry to evolve with her. The visual album accompanying Lemonade, which had its premiere on HBO, likely inspired the VMAs new category this year for Breakthrough Long Form Video.
The details around Beyoncé’s performance tonight are being kept under wraps, but what we do know about tonight’s show is that the opening spot has been taken by this year’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard winner, Rihanna. That leaves the closing performance as a possible spot for Beyoncé, who won the Video Vanguard award in 2014.
The former Destiny’s Child singer has a long history of show-stealing performances at the VMAs. Beyoncé’s performance in 2014 featured a medley of her greatest hits, as well as a backlit sign that announced the word ‘Feminist’ on stage behind the star.
In 2011, the singer performed “Love On Top” before opening her purple sequined tuxedo jacket to reveal a pronounced baby bump, thus announcing her pregnancy with daughter Blue Ivy.
In addition to Beyoncé, this year’s incredible performer list includes Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj, The Chainsmokers and Halsey, Britney Spears and G-Eazy, Future, Nick Jonas and Ty Dolla $ign, and Rihanna.
Presenters for tonight’s show include Kanye West, Kim Kardashian West, Jimmy Fallon, Olympian Michael Phelps and gold-winning Olympic gymnasts Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez, Madison Kocian and Aly Raisman, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Alicia Keys, Ansel Elgort, Bebe Rexha, Fifth Harmony, Jaden Smith, Rita Ora, Shameik Moore and Tove Lo.
The pre-show, which begins at 8E/5P, will feature performances from Alessia Cara, DJ Khaled, Lukas Graham and Jidenna. Jay Pharoah, Nicole Byer, DJ Khaled, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele will provide commentary throughout the live show.
