Carly Rae Jepsen Reveals The Vancouver Inspiration For ‘Your Type’

Your Type BTS Main

November 13 is a big day for pop music, with new albums from One Direction, Justin Bieber, and Alessia Cara all hitting shelves today.

Although we’ve been counting down in anticipation for today’s new music, we’re still not over the amazingness of albums already released this year. Particularly, Carly Rae Jepsen’s EMOTION.

The two-time MMVA performer wrote one of the strongest albums in years with her follow-up to KISS and annihilated her one-hit wonder status once and for all. Included on the new album was her latest single Your Type, with Jepsen recently dropping a Cinderella-inspired music video for the heartbreak hit.

Now Jepsen is taking fans behind the scenes both on the shooting and inspiration of Your Type. While on set of the LA videoshoot, Jepsen talks about the inspiration behind the video’s club. “It [the club] reminds me almost identically of the Media Club in Vancouver where I used to bar tend and sing on occasion,” says Jepsen.

“It was pretty much exactly what we’re playing out today where whenever someone wouldn’t show up for their show and I didn’t have to work too hard I’d get up and play a couple songs and try to grab the attention of the crowd. Sometimes no one would pay attention and sometimes you’d win them over.”

In the BTS video, shot by Jepsen’s boyfriend and Run Away With Me director David Kalani Larkins, Jepsen also talks about working with director Gia Coppola (yeah, those Coppolas). “The thing I love about Gia Coppola is that she kind of has a world she creates with every project,” says Jepsen. “This particular project feels exciting to me because I get to kind of play a character in a role and that’s something new for me.”
