It’s the election that has captivated the world, with Republican nominee Donald Trump sounding off against Democrat Hillary Clinton in an effort to see who will grab the US by the…ballot box and become the President of the United States.
The outcome of the election has a large impact on Canada, with our neighbors to the South representing one of our biggest trading partners. For that reason and many more, Canadians are watching in shock along with the rest of the US as this circus of an election unfolds.
Many Americans are turning to social media to have their voices heard, with a group of celebrities now using their platforms to help bring down Trump. A new program just launched today called “30 Days, 30 Songs” features a number of high profile musicians penning songs against the Republican nominee.
The first offering is care of Death Cab For Cutie, who have released a shockingly beautiful song about a man who has done so many ugly things. Titled “Million Dollar Loan,” the track takes inspiration from Trump’s sizeable loan received from his father and debunks many of the politician’s claims of being a self-made man.
Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard included a message on YouTube along with the new song today, writing, “Lyrically, ‘Million Dollar Loan’ deals with a particularly tone deaf moment in Donald Trump’s ascent to the Republican nomination. While campaigning in New Hampshire last year, he attempted to cast himself as a self-made man by claiming he built his fortune with just a ‘small loan of a million dollars’ from his father. Not only has this statement been proven to be wildly untrue, he was so flippant about it. It truly disgusted me. Donald Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that he is unworthy of the honor and responsibility of being President of the United States of America, and in no way, shape or form represents what this country truly stands for. He is beneath us.”
With each new song showcasing artists who are “united in their desire to speak out against the ignorant, divisive, and hateful campaign of Donald Trump,” anti-Trump members will soon have an impressive soundtrack for their political beliefs. In addition to Death Cab, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, Aimee Mann, and R.E.M. will also contribute to the project.
