Here’s Everything That Happened At The MTV EMAs

MTV EMA Moments Main

The 2015 MTV EMAs went down last night in beautiful Milan and featured incredible performances, surprisingly coherent acceptance speeches, and hit and miss moments from co-hosts Ed Sheeran and Ruby Rose.

Missed the show? Stream it on demand at MTV.ca and check out our recap of the best, worst, and most head scratching moments.

The opening monologue between Ed Sheeran and Ruby Rose contained four F bombs, two blow torches, the first of two terrible spaghetti jokes of the night, one dig at MTV playing nonstop reality shows, one confetti gun, a terrible cat reference, and way more uncomfortable moments than we expected from these two.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis decided that the only way to save Eric Nally’s joints from more knee drops would be to completely suspend him in the air during their high energy performance of Downtown.

Jason Derulo figured out that if he used the five hoverboards he bought at 3 am from the Shopping Network during his EMA performance he could write them off as a business expense.

3

Pretty Little Liars stars Shay Mitchell and Ashley Benson presented Justin Bieber with Best Male and we had major flashbacks to Benson’s PLL character Hanna stanning hard for Biebs. Though Justin Bieber may have been ‘winging it’, he gave what was possibly his most sincere and eloquent thank you speech ever, a trend that he continued throughout the night after taking home another five awards. Things are crazy in Europe.

4

Ellie Goulding ditched the costume change and wore her red carpet dress during her performance of Love Me Like You Do. It wasn’t Goulding’s strongest vocal showing, but the giant diamond she sang inside of was pretty cool.

5

Resident MTV house band Twenty One Pilots (see: MTV VMAs, MTV Movie Awards, MTV EMAS) had the stunning backdrop of the Piazza del Duomo to their insanely catchy single Tear In My Heart. We gotta go to Milan, like, yesterday.

8

Most of the skits between Ed Sheeran and Ruby Rose unfortunately missed the mark, but Andrea Bocelli acting as the director for this year’s EMAs was pretty impressive. The famed Italian opera singer later performed with Tori Kelly, but this was unfortunately cut for North American audiences.

7

Ed Sheeran’s hosting moments may not have been what we had hoped for, but his performance of Lay It On Me with Rudimental was nothing short of perfection. Someone should give him an award for Best Live Act.

1

Sheeran introducing Justin Bieber and commenting that he finally found a shirt to wear was spot-on. The Biebs employed an incredible light show for What Do You Mean, ditching the tears and looking more comfortable on stage than we’ve seen him in years. Biebs then picked up an award for Best North American act, having a cute twins moment with co-host Ruby Rose.

9

It looks like there really are no hard feelings between Ed Sheeran and Ellie Goulding, since Sheeran was having a drink and a laugh with Goulding when he was announced as Best Live Act.

Jess Glynn and James Bay are probably the two most unknown artists on the EMA bill in North America, but both singers delivered performances that will likely changed that.

6

We are totally guilty of using the word ‘slay’ too often when discussing Tori Kelly. But damn, girlfriend can slay her own songs and The Fugees and Mary J. Blige and TLC. So yeah, it’s not our fault.

12 Tori Kelly

Much likes his MTV Music Award performance this summer, Pharrell combined Broadway and activism with his performance of Freedom to close out the EMAs. While it wasn’t short on showmanship, it felt like a performance that may have been a better opener than closer.
