John Mayer Surprises Toronto Fans With Shawn Mendes Duet

Fans of John Mayer who were in attendance at the singer’s Toronto show on Monday night were treated to a duet between Mayer and one of Canada’s biggest stars.

Returning home to Toronto after performing at Sunday’s JUNO Awards in Ottawa was Shawn Mendes, who took the stage at the Air Canada Centre along with Mayer (check out all the must-see moments from the 2017 JUNO Awards here).

The surprise duet made for a memorable night for concertgoers, who were treated to a seamless mash-up of Mendes’ 2016 single Mercy and Mayer’s “In Your Atmosphere” from 2007’s Where the Light Is: John Mayer Live In Los Angeles.

The two pop stars took turns singing on both tracks before showing off their impressive harmonizing skills, something we don’t often get to hear from the solo singers.

Mendes is a long time fan of Mayer, with the young singer often borrowing guitar licks and adapting the writing style of his icon. Covering Mayer’s songs during his Vine days, Mendes released his most John Mayer-esque track on 2016’s Illuminated with the track “Ruin” (listen here), a bluesy heartbreaker of a track that we would love to hear the two perform together. Is it time for a reunion yet?

Never one to shy away from praising his musical mentors, including Mayer and Ed Sheeran, Mendes thanked the American singer for inviting him on stage at the Air Canada Centre, a venue Mendes has headlined himself.

As for Mayer, the singer obviously has no issue with the Toronto teen adapting his musical style. Calling Mendes “dynamite,” Mayer described the pair’s mash-up as “over the top good.” We’d even call it great.

Mayer is currently on tour promoting his latest album, the two-part collection titled The Search For Everything (read more about the success of Mayer’s latest record here). Released in two waves, the album includes eight new tracks and acts as Mayer’s seventh studio record.
