With exactly four days until the release of Made In The A.M., One Direction have released the fourth song off the album’s tracklist and it sounds like a bittersweet goodbye.
History switches gears from the rock-fueled anthems Perfect and Drag Me Down to a slower, folky, acoustic sing-along.
Complete with clapping and a crowd vocal chorus, Liam Payne calls History the “modern version of You’ve Got A Friend In Me.” Niall Horan revealed on Twitter that they actually brought fans into the studio to record the chorus together.
Actually @julianbulian and I brought some fans to the studio to record the chorus as like a crowd vocal.. So this song is really YOURS

But more than anything, the newest track sounds like the band’s sincere farewell to all of their adoring fans.
With lyrics like “We could be the greatest team that the world has ever seen” and “This is not the end/We can make it, you know it, you know”, they’re no doubt alluding to their extended hiatus scheduled next year.
Made In The A.M., the band’s fifth studio album and first one without former bandmate Zayn Malik could be 1D’s last hurrah for a while. It’s unclear whether the band has solid plans to reconvene, but if this this is the end, we’ll find solace in History‘s lyrics: Don’t let it go, we can make some more, we can live forever.
