Sam Smith Is Singing The New James Bond Theme And Here’s Everything We Know So Far

Sam Smith for Spectre Main

Sam Smith has just confirmed what our ears and hearts have been praying for – he is set to sing the new James Bond theme for Spectre. We love it when the good guy wins in the end.

Smith confirmed the news on his Instagram page today, writing: “This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.”

Past performers of the various Bond themes includes Madonna, Adele, Sheryl Crow, Shirley Bassey, Paul McCartney, Duran Duran and Carly Simon.

Smith also revealed the name of the new theme song, writing, “You can pre-order ‘Writing’s On The Wall’ on CD or vinyl using the link on my profile, or on iTunes from midnight.”

Smith told BBC radio host Nick Grimshaw that he wrote the song in 20 minutes in January, though he denied being part of the film this past July. Smith said he’s relieved he can finally talk about the film after keeping it a secret for the first half of the year.

The 23 year-old British singer also said that the original demo version of Writing’s On The Wall he presented to the film studio is the same version that will be released to the public. Talk about nailing it in one take!

Writing’s On The Wall was co-written with Smith’s frequent collaborator Jimmy Naples, who also helped pen Stay With Me and Lay Me Down from Sam’s debut album, In The Lonely Hour.

Hours before releasing the official announcement today, Smith Instagrammed a picture of his finger with a ring showing off the new Spectre logo.

The full song will be released later this month on September 25, with James Bond: Spectre starring Daniel Craig hitting theatres on November 6 in North America.
