Great Scott! Shoes With Self-Tying Laces Are Finally Hitting The Streets

Time to toss away that Back to the Future Part II Blu-ray (actually, don’t do that): Nike has officially revealed its eternally-anticipated sneaker that can tie its own laces—just like in the movies!

If this news makes you feel like you’re going back to last October’s Back to the Future day, that’s because Michael J. Fox/Marty McFly tested out similar technology in tandem with the milestone date that coincided with his first trip to futuristic Hill Valley.

But those were Air Mags, and everyone knows Air Mags are so two seasons ago. While those shoes were sold in extremely limited supply at an auction to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s disease research, these will be available for public feet.

Nike CEO Mark Parker unveiled the HyperAdapt 1.0 (yup, sounds pretty space-age) at New York City’s Nike Innovation 2016 event just this week. And how does this amazing technology work?

“When you step in, your heel will hit a sensor and the system will automatically tighten. Then there are two buttons on the side to tighten and loosen,” explained Nike senior innovator Tiffany Beers. “You can adjust it until it’s perfect.”

The HyperAdapt 1.0 (kinda just makes you wonder what 2.0 can bring to the table) will be available in black, white, and grey for Nike+ members this holiday season. The company also said its Nike+ app will get a big ol’ update in June that will grant access to “coveted products and events.”

So if you really want to party like it’s October 22, 2015, download that Nike+ app and wait a bit longer. In the meantime, dig those light-up soles in the promo video below:
