Pickering, Ontario’s finest Shawn Mendes has returned to steal hearts with a cover of Chance the Rapper’s “All We Got,” and while it’s a not necessarily a cover we saw coming, the pop heartthrob pulls it off nicely.
Mendes announced the cover on Twitter and also revealed to his fans that he’s currently working on producing his own songs.

Mendes slows down Chance’s “All We Got,” which appeared on his last year’s Coloring Book, and transforms it into a soulful, piano-driven slow jam. Although this version of the song doesn’t have a Kanye cameo, Mendes makes it all his own and the result is a smooth, mellowed-out version of the original twitchy beat. Rather than rapping like Chance, Mendes sings the lyrics, turning the song into a moving ballad.
The cover comes as no surprise since Mendes has previously mentioned how much he looks up to Chance. “The way he put across all of his music—the whole vibe—I think he took the world and threw it for a loop and reminded us what music really is,” he said at his Beats 1 pop-up special last September.
But this isn’t the first time the pop singer has taken on Lil Chano. Last June, he shared an Instagram video doing an acoustic version of Chance’s “Same Drugs” on guitar.
The past year was a big one for Mendes with the release of his explosive sophomore album Illuminate, which featured several chart hits including “Treat You Better” and “Mercy.” If this new cover is any hint at what we can expect from Mendes’ own work in the coming year—we can’t wait.
