Since its first show back in 1984, the MTV VMA have always been a breeding ground for unscripted and unpredictable moments that become instant additions to pop culture history. Bringing together some of the biggest names in music for a night of very few rules, the only thing we can expect with the MTV VMA is the unexpected. Plus, a really great show.
With just a few days to go until the 2018 MTV VMA, we’re placing on bets on what will be the must-see moments from this year’s show. Prepare for the Meat Dress 2.0.
Featuring performances from Nicki Minaj, Shawn Mendes, Ariana Grande, Post Malone, Jennifer Lopez, Rita Ora, Travis Scott, and Logic with Ryan Tedder, the 2018 MTV VMA are going down on Monday, August 20 at 9 p.m. ET on Much and MTV.
Did you watch the 2018 MTV Movie and TV Awards hosted by Tiffany Haddish? Or Girls Trip? Or the Emmys? Or when she hosted Saturday Night Live? Or any of her stand up specials/late night show interviews/Instagram stories? Then you know that Tiffany Haddish is a one-woman party who never fails to make us lol. Plus we want to see that white Alexander McQueen dress again.
We don’t know who it will be or what they (won’t) be wearing, but every year at the MTV VMA there is a celeb who is juuuuuuust shy of being naked on the red carpet. We’re putting our money on presenter Teyana Taylor, who slayed the VMA in 2016 when Kanye West premiered his video for “Fade,” which starred the singer.
We know, we know. It’s 2018, which means if you miss seeing something live you can still catch it on DVR, YouTube, SnapChat, in GIF form, etc. We get it. But there’s nothing quite like seeing a totally shocking moment live. Think, the La La Land/Moonlight Oscars mix-up. Or in MTV VMA terms, this.
The MTV VMA have featured many inspiring speeches and moving performances over the years. On Monday night, Rita Ora is scheduled to deliver a tribute performance to her late friend Avicii, a moment that will undoubtedly be one of the most impactful of the night.
Celebs—they’re just like us. They pump their own gas, buy their own groceries, and sometimes awkwardly dance.
The MTV VMA never fail to give us truly shocking fashion moments. We’ll never forget the first time we saw Lady Gaga’s meat dress or Rose McGowan’s missing mesh dress. With fashionistas Blake Lively and Shay Mitchell scheduled to present at this year’s show, we’re expecting some serious red carpet slaying. Plus, maybe an out-there outfit from performer Post Malone.
The MTV VMA are known for performances that push boundaries, from Britney Spears and Madonna sharing a kiss, to Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke’s twerk-heavy performance of “Blurred Lines.” As for this year, we’re putting our money on Nicki Minaj, who appears topless on the cover of her latest album Queen.
Speaking of Miley, beefs in the music industry are no longer relegated to West Coast versus East Coast. Pop princesses feud, former band members can’t be seated in the same row as one another, exes have to be separated on the red carpet, and sometimes Twitter feuds are handled IRL on stage. What’s good, MTV VMA?
Seeing a celeb fangirl over their idol is almost as exciting as getting to meet the celeb ourselves. Almost.
The MTV VMA aren’t the Oscars, which means that no one is getting played off by orchestra music or being censored. Thanks to the award shows’ history of encouraging artists to express themselves, there’s a long list of incredible speeches, like Fiona Apple saying the world is bullshit after winning Best New Artist, or Kanye West’s Video Vanguard speech in 2016.
We love seeing couples on the MTV VMA red carpet, from Courtney and Kurt, to Lisa Marie and Michael (still confused about that one). This year we’re hoping to catch a glimpse of Ariana Grande and her new fiancé Pete Davidson. The pair have yet to walk a red carpet together and with Grande performing at this year’s show, the MTV VMA is the perfect place to make their official debut. Plus, they both still look like teenagers.
At some point, during some performance, on some stage, someone will get wet. Come on, Shawn Mendes.
Leave it to the biggest pop stars in the world to remind us to get our butts to the gym. With Jennifer Lopez as this year’s Vanguard Video Award recipient, you can bet we’re going to do a few ab crunches in front of the couch during her acceptance speech. Slay J Lo.
What happens when you get the biggest celebs in the world seated in one room for two hours? GIFs for the rest of the year. We’re hoping presenter Millie Bobby Brown follows in the footsteps of her idol Taylor Swift and gives the camera some very cute, very cheeky moments.
From Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, to Jay Z and Kanye West, to Rihanna and Katy Perry, there’s something about seeing best friends (celebrity edition) hanging out at the MTV VMA that warms our hearts. Keep an eye out for frequent collaborators Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj, who are both scheduled to perform, as well as presenters and Night School co-stars Tiffany Haddish and Kevin Hart.
