After dropping a spooky video last month for “Valentine,” Aussie band 5 Seconds of Summer are back with an even more enticing video that’s full of glitter, pies, and too-close-for-comfort shots.
The trippy new video takes the lyrics from their latest single and translates them literally into visuals, with band members Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, Ashton Irwin, and Michael Clifford crushing chocolate éclairs with their hands as cherry pies float around their heads. The video also features repetitive shots of balloons popping, drums being hit, guitar strings being strummed, and up close images of the band members’ mouths as they sing along to the dark love track. You may find it really relaxing…or not.
The ominous earworm “Valentine” is the latest high point in 5 Seconds of Summer’s huge 2018. Taking three years to create their third studio album Youngblood, the band returned with an elevated sound and look, making a huge progression in their music with singles like “Want You Back” and “Youngblood.” Touring extensively throughout Asia, North America, and Europe this year, 5 Seconds of Summer are proving that sometimes the best way for a band to move forward is to take a beat and step away from the stage for some much-needed reflection.
In addition to the new album and ongoing tour, 5 Seconds of Summer also made their iHeartRadio MMVAs debut in August and performed their huge single “Youngblood.” Putting on a high energy rock show, the group continued to distance their sound from their previous pop punk-centric singles, with Youngblood displaying a more mature and finely tuned sensibility.
