It’s still August, but 5 Seconds of Summer are ready for Halloween. Or Valentine’s Day. They’re really into holidays. Dropping their video for “Valentine” on Sunday night, the Australian rockers brought out the sinister bass line of their latest track with a simple video that builds in suspense.
Wearing skeleton costumes, the four members, including Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, Ashton Irwin and Michael Clifford, hold their respective instruments while bopping their heads along to the song in unison. Shot on a loop, the image of the band members in costume flickers to the group in person every few seconds, keeping eyeballs glued to the screen in anticipation of an eerie ending. Possibly the eeriest ending of all, the two images remain a constant, giving the viewer an uneasy sense of waiting.
“Valentine” is the third single from 5 Seconds of Summer’s 2018 album Youngblood. The new song follows the band’s previous impressive releases, including “Want You Back” and the title track from the record.
In addition to releasing their new video this weekend, 5 Seconds of Summer also made their debut at Sunday’s iHeartRadio MMVAs and performed their huge single “Youngblood.” Putting on a high energy rock show, the group continued to distance their sound from their previous pop punk-centric singles, with Youngblood displaying a more mature and finely tuned sensibility.
