Back in July, Canadian electronic band A Tribe Called Red dropped their new single “R.E.D.,” featuring Canadian rapper Narcy and actor/rapper Yasiin Bey, who’s best known by his former stage name, Mos Def. Now the group has released a stunning music video to go with the uplifting track.
The JUNO-winning trio don’t appear in the new video, instead leaving the acting to Bey and Narcy, who also directs. Using Cape Town, South Africa as the picturesque backdrop, the video was inspired by Bey’s real-life detainment in South Africa after overstaying with a visitor’s permit. The two men walk through Cape Town, using a deserted dessert and checkpoint as the backdrops for their performance of “R.E.D.”
The video opens with a call out to ATCR’s upcoming album We Are The Halucci Nation, with a voice saying, “We are the Halluci Nation. Our DNA is of earth and sky.”
A Tribe Called Red have made their third studio album a collaborative effort. In addition to Narcy and Bey, the trio travelled to Manawan, Quebec to work with drum group Black Bear from Atikamekw Nation for “R.E.D.” and the song “Stadium Pow Wow.”
In addition to the video for “R.E.D.,” ATCR have also released another new track this month. Working in the studio with Canadian throat singer Tanya Tagaq, the trio uploaded “SILA” to YouTube last week.
We Are The Halucci Nation is set to be released September 16.
