Six years ago, American fangirl and writer Anna Todd contributed to the growing trend of celebrity fan fiction with After, a dark love story about an 18-year-old student whose simple life gets tossed upside down thanks to “a rude boy named Harry.” But “Harry” is no average college boy—he’s Harry Styles, the famous frontman of One Direction.
The 99-chapter fan fiction took off within the Directioner fandom and has since been read over 513 million times online and in its published edition. We now have our first look at the official movie adaptation, due out this spring.
The After movie swaps out Styles for the fictional Hardin Scott (Hero Fiennes-Tiffin), a mysterious character who is clearly hiding secrets about his past behind his good looks. The young and naïve Tessa Young (Josephine Langford) ignores the warning signs and lets herself fall for the bad boy—a move that quickly presents itself to be a regrettable one. “Nothing will be the same” flashes across the screen just before Scott presents some seriously stalker-ish vibes à la Joe from You. We saw it coming, but our jaws still dropped.
