Beyoncé returned to the MTV VMAs stage this year, after being nominated for an incredible 11 awards—and proved why she deserved each and every single nomination. We actually think she deserved more. Best Rock Video? We’d give her a Moonman for that.
Bringing her Lemonade visual album to life, Beyoncé stole the show thanks to her visionary performances of “Sorry,” “Pray You Catch Me,” “Hold Up,” “Don’t Hurt Yourself” and “Formation.” Owning the stage solo and with her incredible team of dancers, Beyoncé rewrote the rules of award show performances and raised the bar to what we will now described as Beyoncé-level.
At one point, the screen behind Beyoncé flashed the words ‘God Is God, I Am Not,’ reminding fans that there is a limit to idolization. Beyoncé’s limit is just really high.
The former Destiny’s Child member came to slay, and slay she did. With such a legendary performance, picking our favourite moment feels overwhelming. So we won’t.
Instead, here are just a few of the points at which Beyoncé slayed her VMA performance.
When she put on the coolest light show ever.
When she let her booty do the work.
When she stood still so we could catch our breath.
When she delivered the “Becky with the good hair” line like only Beyoncé can.
When she was the real Khaleesi and walked through fire.
*Real Khaleesi* slaying.
When she put the censors to work being a bawse.
When she made you think, damn, Cruella de Vil had a sweet coat.
When you realize there have been zero crowd shots during her performance because no one can look away from Beyoncé.
When you made a note to YouTube how to braid a fishtail.
When you try to think of who you can get revenge against, by getting your paper.
When you realize Beyoncé has been singing live for 17 minutes and everyone else is lip synching for three-minute performances.
