Shut Up! Anne Hathaway Says ‘Princess Diaries 3’ Is Probably Happening

Princess Diaries 3

Holy Genovia, we may finally be getting a Princess Diaries 3! Anne Hathaway aka Mia Thermopolis aka the Queen of Genovia appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on Thursday night and updated fans on the current status of Princess Diaries 3. She wants it. Julie Andrews wants it. And there’s a script. For now, this is as good as it’s gonna get.

“There is a script for the third movie. There is a script,” said Hathaway. “I want to do it. Julie [Andrews] wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen,” continued Hathaway. “It’s just we don’t want to do it unless it’s perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it. It’s as important to us as it is to you, and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it.”

News of a third instalment in the beloved series has been floating around for years. In 2016, director Garry Marshall said that he was ready for a third film, but was waiting for a then very pregnant Hathaway to be ready to return to set. “I was with Anne Hathaway a couple weeks ago, it looks like we want to do Princess Diaries 3 in Manhattan,” Marshall told PEOPLE. “Anne Hathaway is very pregnant, so we have to wait until she has the baby and then I think we’re going to do it.” Sadly, Marshall passed away in 2017, once again leaving the fate of the film in the air.

One year after Marshall’s death, Oscar winner Julie Andrews told Buzzfeed that she and Hathaway hoped to continue the beloved series in honour of the director. “I think we might do it in honour of him,” Andrews said, referring to Marshall. “Annie had an idea that she wanted to pursue about it, and I’m all for it, so if she’d like to.”

Princess Diaries author Meg Cabot has continued to create new books in the series, with Cabot even revealing that she plans on adapting the YA story into an adult spin-off that features Mia getting married. So, the stars are there, the content is there, we just need a director. Ava DuVernay and Patty Jenkins are two that come to mind, with both women mastering big budget blockbusters with awesome female leads.

When we last left Queen Mia, she had changed the law in Genovia and ascended the throne without being forced to marry. Yas kween for real. We don’t know what the Princess Diaries 3 would be about (fingers crossed it includes the return of Sandra Oh and Heather Matarazzo), but consider our tickets already bought. We want more Mia faces.

So many Mia faces.

And Miaisms.

She is our spirit animal.

We never get tired of these two kweens together.

Ugh, so swoony.

Plus, we never tire of a good glow up.
