Prior to releasing their highly anticipated sixth studio album Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner confirmed that the band was going in a totally new direction for their first record in five years. Sticking closely to their no-promo strategy for the new record, fans were unsure of what to expect from the English four-piece, who finally dropped the album on May 11.
Replacing their usual fair of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, the 2018 version of Arctic Monkeys are claiming new territory with songs inspired by jazz greats and science fiction, with Turner writing about surveillance and escapism, all centred on a fictional hotel and casino. In “Four Out Of Five,” their first video for Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, all the themes come together both visually and lyrically, with Arctic Monkeys paying homage to The Shining.
Just released this weekend, “Four Out Of Five” features Turner as two characters. The first, a bearded manager of a hotel that specializes in surveillance and virtual reality, Turner is hard at work in a grand palace with a huge team of tech experts. The second Turner is clean shaven with slicked back hair and acts as the first guest for the hotel, unaware that every move and word is being recorded.
Arctic Monkeys are setting out on tour in support of Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino starting May 22, with three Canadian dates including Montreal’s Osheaga on August 4 and the Air Canada Centre in Toronto on August 5. The tour will wrap in Vancouver at the Pacific Coliseum on October 25.
