Hamilton pop-rockers Arkells are knocking at doors once again with the new single “People’s Champ.”
The anthemic single marks the first tease of the JUNO-winning band’s upcoming fifth studio album which is expected to be released later this year. Check out the new track below.
The upbeat, Motown-inspired song hears the group reflecting on the world’s current political climate with lyrics like, “The guy currently in charge / Who only seems to be concerned with creating hysteria / And bringing attention and wealth to himself.”
In a statement, frontman Max Kerman detailed what “People’s Champ” is about and where it’s title comes from.
“We’re comforted every day by the people in our neighbourhood who go the extra mile for their community—especially when they don’t have to. We love that person. This song is about the opposite of that: it’s about the guy who acts like Robin Hood, but is the farthest thing from it. But that’s OK: look around and you’ll find people’s champs all around ya.”
The new tune follows 2016’s commercially successful “Knocking At Your Door” which saw the Arkells give a tour of Toronto in its music video.
The song went on to be the official unofficial anthem of Team Canada’s PyeongChang Winter Olympics, and the band was lucky enough to play the track for them live in Korea, after a Twitter whirlwind caught the attention of Kerman and Air Canada.
Arkells are currently on tour supporting Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls before they head out on the Canadian festival circuit this summer. The group will perform at Thunder Bay Blues Festival, Area 506 Festival, and SKOOKUM Festival.
