It’s the musical that has won 11 Tony Awards and taken over pop culture. Now Hamilton is extending its reign beyond Broadway and getting some of the biggest pop stars and rappers to take on its famous soundtrack for Hamilton Mixtape.
In the stage version of Hamilton, the track “Helpless” is performed by Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth “Eliza” Schuyler, but it was Ashanti and Ja Rule who writer Lin-Manuel Miranda had in mind when penning the romantic ballad.
Miranda appeared on Conan last week to talk about the Hamilton Mixtape and said that Ashanti and Ja Rule’s track stands out for him in the star-studded album. “When Ashanti and Ja Rule sing ‘Helpless,’ it will give you all the feels, as the children of the internet say,” said Miranda, who invited the duo to Hamilton to pitch them the remix. Miranda even went a step further to give Ja Rule an idea of how the rapper would sound on the track.
In addition to the ultimate 2000s reunion of Ja Rule and Ashanti, Hamilton Mixtape includes an impressive collection of artists reimagining songs from the musical, including Queen Latifah, Kelly Clarkson, Sia, Usher, and Miguel.
