From the TV series that made red bathing suits, running in slow motion, and swimming lessons look really, really cool comes the latest retro movie remake. Baywatch the movie is picking up right where Baywatch, the 11-season TV series from the 1990s, left off — at the beach.
Following in the footsteps of successful retro TV reboots like 21 Jump Street, The Avengers, and Charlie’s Angels, Baywatch is getting the big screen adaptation in the upcoming film starring Dwayne Johnson (obviously) and Zac Efron (totes).
Many of the original characters from the long-running TV series will be reprised in the upcoming film, arriving May 2017. Dwayne Johnson will take on David Hasselhoff’s role as Mitch Buchannon, Zac Efron will play David Charvet’s Matt Brody, Kelly Rohrbach will play Pamela Anderson’s C.J. Parker, Ilfenesh Hadera will play Alexandra Paul’s Stephanie Holden and Alexandra Daddario will play Nicole Eggert’s Summer Quinn.
The upcoming film will also included appearances from Baywatch alum David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson.
The first teaser trailer out today packs just as much cheese as it does over-the-top action, and we would expect nothing less from a film honouring the 1989 until 2001 series. Plus, there’s lots of running.
In the new film, Efron plays a hot shot new lifeguard who is more interested in partying than saving lives, while Johnson thinks his team of lifeguards should be figuring out why dead bodies are ending up on their beach. Priyanka Chopra plays the films’ villain, because we all know that Baywatch is about equality of hotness on screen.
Baywatch slowly runs into theatres on May 26, 2017.
