Music merchandise has always been a way to display fandom and, in 2016, high-end pieces and pop up shops were the trend in merch. Today, we’re looking at some of the most popular merch items in 2016, from the trendiest to the priciest.*
To promote his highly anticipated 2016 album Starboy, The Weeknd scheduled four pop up shops, including one in his hometown of Toronto. Most of The Weeknd’s new merch, which matches the aesthetic of the music videos and short film for Starboy, are sold out, but there are still a few new items available online.
Justin Bieber went high-end this year, partnering with US department store Barney’s for a line of exclusive tour merch, including a bomber jacket for $1,675 and a sleeveless flannel shirt for $700. The Biebs thankfully also made more affordable tour merch available, but we’d still like to know who bought sweat pants for $1,250.
Tegan and Sara
Not only did Canadian duo Tegan and Sara release their incredible eighth studio album Love You To Death in June, they also embarked on a worldwide tour, launched the Tegan and Sara Foundation to raise money and awareness for LGBTQ and women’s rights, and released some pretty kick-ass merch.
Queen Bey’s career continued on its incredible upwards trajectory in 2016 thanks to the release of her groundbreaking album and film for Lemonade. A sold-out stadium tour and performances at the Super Bowl and the MTV Music Awards ensured that Beyoncé was everywhere this year. Thanks to her line of every day and holiday-themed merch, you can take Bey with you wherever you slay.
Kanye West’s Life of Pablo merch were some of the hottest items this year, available on secret sites and in pop up stores around the world. The merch is no longer available online, but we’re hoping West’s team will restock the inventory in 2017.
Zayn Malik left boy band One Direction to forge his own path, which he’s done through both his solo music and merch. Teaming up with artist Mark Wilson, known for designing Judas Priest’s album covers, Malik’s merch includes badass original artwork as well as print in Urdu and Arabic.
Drake teamed up with Canada Goose to release exclusive OVO-branded merch, but unfortunately it was so popular it’s now sold out, along with most of the merch on Drizzy’s site.
