Few artists love surprises more than Beyonce and that was definitely the case when the superstar surprised the audience during last night’s BET Awards. Beyonce opened the show with a performance of her track “Freedom” off her sixth studio album, Lemonade.
The performance began with the dancers making their way through the star-studded crowd while an excerpt from Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech played throughout the arena.
Fans that have seen Beyonce on her current tour will recognize the performance, which features Bey and her team of female dancers performing in a rectangular pool. The singer doubled the dancers during last night’s appearance by adding a group of male dancers halfway through the performance to create an even larger impact.
In addition to her dancers, Beyonce was also joined by her “Freedom” collaborator Kendrick Lamar, who rose up from below the stage to perform his verse. The two performers feed off one another to heighten the already intense performance, taking advantage of the water below them, literally kicking up the emotion.
