Bon Iver Drops “33 ‘GOD” From Upcoming Record ’22, A Million’

Following the exceptional  “22 (OVER S∞∞N)” and “10 d E A T h b R E a s T ⊠ ⊠” Bon Iver dropped earlier this month, the Justin Vernon-led band is back with”33 ‘GOD’.”

Starting somberly with Vernon’s signature falsetto over a twinkling piano, “33 ‘GOD'” explores spirituality and love. “I find God and religion too / Staying at the Ace Hotel,” Vernon croons on the soulful track, which samples Scottish singer Paolo Nutini’s 2014 track “Iron Sky.”

“33 ‘GOD'” will appear on the band’s 22, A Million, scheduled for release on September 30. The accompanying lyric video shows stretches of road, flashes of animated lightening and the occasional rainbow graphic.

The romantic lyrics expressed alongside the religious imagery might be a recurring theme throughout the new album.

22, A Million is part love letter, part final resting place of two decades of searching for self-understanding like a religion. And the inner-resolution of maybe never finding that understanding,”  Bon Iver said in a press release.

“The album’s 10 poly-fi recordings are a collection of sacred moments, love’s torment and salvation, contexts of intense memories, signs that you can pin meaning onto or disregard as coincidence. If Bon Iver, Bon Iver built a habitat rooted in physical spaces, then 22, A Million is the letting go of that attachment to a place.”
