It’s been 37 years since the first Brit Awards show. This year, the 2016 show is gearing up to take place Feb. 24 in London and we couldn’t be more excited!
But it’s crazy how time flies. When taking a look at past Brit award nominees and performers, we saw how much the music industry has evolved over time. Yet, sometimes it feels like it was just yesterday that the Spice Girls were dominating the world. (Side note: We still can’t believe the ’90s ended 17 years ago.)
Let’s take a look at some Brit Award milestones and anniversaries for 2016:
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Michael Jackson winning the Brit Award for Artist Of A Generation. The King of Pop also performed Earth Song during the show in 1996 too. We miss this legend!
The Spice Girls haven’t performed at The Brit Awards for 16 years. But in 2010, Emma Bunton (Baby Spice) and Melanie Brown (Scary Spice) appeared at the show to accept the award for British Hits 30.
It was 33 years ago in 1983 that The Brit Awards gave out their first award for non-British talent. The first non-Brit to receive an award is Kid Creole, an American artist from the group, Kid Creole and the Coconuts.
Ten years ago, Kaiser Chiefs wont the most Brit Awards of the night. The band won three Brit Awards: British Group, British Live Act, and British Rock Act. They also performed I Predict A Riot. This was also the last year that the band took home any Brit Awards.
Ed Sheeran won a Brit Awards for British Breakthrough Act in 2012. It’s crazy to think it was that long ago that he came on the scene! Now, Sheeran’s won the 2015 Album of the Year award for X, and is nominated for two Brit Awards this year, British Single Of The Year for Bloodstream and British Video for Photograph.
Two decades ago, a Canadian performed at The Brit Awards: Alanis Morissette. She won for Best International Breakthrough Act, but lost to Bjork for Best International Female.
It’s been 16 years since former Spice Girl, Geri Halliwell was birthed on stage from these giant legs during a performance at the awards for her song Bag It Up. This stage setup is very Miley, even though it was well before Miley’s fame.
Also, it’s been a decade since Kanye West showed up to the Brit Awards’ red carpet with this posse of semi-nude golden women.
Of course, we can’t forget that ten years ago, Paris Hilton (AKA the “it” girl of the early 2000s), slayed us with this gorgeous gold cocktail dress. Who else misses the days when Miss Hilton ruled the world, pre-Kardashian fame?
We seriously miss Lorde and can’t wait until she releases new music. The Brits must miss her too because it’s already been a speedy two years since she won any Brits or was nominated. She won for International Female Solo Artist in 2014.
Seriously, where has time gone? Catch the Brit Awards airing on MUCH on Feb. 24 at 8 p.m.!
