Carly Rae Jepsen Has Your New Self-Empowerment Anthem With ‘Party For One’

Carly Rae Jepsen

It’s a good time to love pop music. Not only did Swedish artist Robyn drop her highly anticipated album Honey in October, her first in eight years, singer Carly Rae Jepsen has now released the lead single from her upcoming fourth studio album. The two artists appear to converge in Jepsen’s “Party For One,” with Jepsen penning her own version of Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own,” with an added layer of self-pleasure thrown in for good measure.

Begging to be blasted through headphones on full volume by Jepsen’s growing list of stans, “Party For One” is peak CRJ, showcasing her innate ability to pen emotionally deep earworms with catchy choruses that are custom made for radio play. Jepsen’s “Party For One” is yet another of her Trojan horse hits, a seemingly innocent bubble gum pop track that upon further examination is comprised of layers of intricate musical arrangements and inspiration from the disco and electronic eras of decades past. Then there’s the bonus of sneaking in the subject matter of masturbation. Get it, gurl.

Teaming up with director Bardia Zeinali, the video follows Jepsen and a group of guests at a lonely hearts hotel, a place where the heartbroken go alone to delve into their pain, whether that means dancing in their underwear, eating spaghetti in a tub, or going through their bag of sex toys. For Jepsen, her heartbreak is handled with sponsorship from Absolut vodka and some old fashion jumping on the bed.

Releasing a statement about her latest single, Jepsen says “To me ‘Party For One’ is an anthem of what it is to celebrate time with yourself, which is a hard thing for people to really enjoy sometimes, and it’s something I’m learning to do more and more. This song represents a lot of what this album is about for me which is romantic love but self-love too.”

“Party For One” may not have the power to hook mainstream listeners like previous hits “I Really Like You” or “Cut To The Feeling,” but the new single accomplishes the goal of establishing Jepsen’s sound evolution.

Carly Rae Jepsen’s fourth studio album is set to be released in 2019 and we’ll keep dancing to “Party For One” until then.
