14 Years Later: Celebrating The Life And Music Of R&B Princess Aaliyah

On this day 14 years ago, we lost the princess of R&B, Aaliyah Dana Haughton. (Insert crying emojis here) The iconic singer, dancer, and actress was born on January 16, 1979 in Brooklyn, New York. At 22 years old, her life came to a tragic end in a plane crash in the Bahamas after shooting a music video for her single, Rock the Boat.

Aaliyah was known for smashing hits like One In A Million, Try Again, and Back & Forth. She had three studio albums, Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number (1994), One In A Million (1996), her self-titled album Aaliyah (2001) and two posthumous albums I Care 4 U (2002) and Ultimate Aaliyah (2005). Like many musicians, Aaliyah got into acting and landed a role in Queen of the Damned and Romeo Must Die; she was also was expected to be in Matrix Reloaded.

Although her time was here was short, she had an incredible impact on the evolution of pop culture with her sweet-sounding voice and beautiful smile.

First and foremost, she was a musical innovator and we will always remember her for her beautiful music. We would like to continue her legacy on this day by remembering 14 of Aaliyah’s most memorable tracks.

Chris Brown, Teyana Taylor, Drake, Ciara, J. Cole, and Alicia Keys are just a few artists who were influenced by the legacy Aaliyah has left behind through her tomboy-like fashion, memorable dance moves, and angelic sound.

Producer and friend of Aaliyah, Timbaland recently announced via Instagram that we can expect new music from Aaliyah in the near future. We are hoping that music comes sooner than later!

Rest in beautiful peace, Baby Girl. We miss you.
