As if Charli XCX wasn’t already killing the music game, she just proved to us that she’s continuing to slay with new track “Gone” featuring Christine and the Queens.
The music video shows Charli and Christine tied to a car, half struggling in the ropes and half being dramatic, while skipping to scenes of them having a singing showdown, reminiscent of this iconic vine. We also see them performing in the rain and surrounded by fire. Definitely an interesting video, but it suits the music, so that’s what truly matters.
Speaking of the music, the track is a true bop—with a strong back beat and good minute-long instrumental, remix-style interlude. The lyrics tell a whole other story, touching on personal insecurities brought on by others and feeling lost. Together, they pair up to make a true hardcore track.
According to a post of Charli’s on Instagram, the song is about “those situations where you are surrounded by loads of people but feel so isolated and alone.” She continued to explain that “this song is about breaking down but it’s also about breaking free. It feels like one big external scream.” It’s something we can probably all relate to.

💗 GONE FT CHRIS DROPS TOMORROW 💗 7.30PM UK @ANNIEMACDJ 💗 HOTTEST RECORD IN THE WORLD 💗 @BBCRADIO1 💗 this song is about those situations where you are surrounded by loads of people but feel so isolated and alone. I feel like that a lot of the time in social situations. I never know what to do with myself, I feel so insecure and out of place and lost. I feel like a lot of people I know get those feelings. When it comes to me, I’ll either party through it and try to escape my feelings or I will totally cave in. The emotions that come alongside anxiety are so huge and crippling. This song is about breaking down but it’s also about breaking free. It feels like one big external scream. Both this song and video are a huge release of energy for me. When I hear it and when I dance to it I feel truly euphoric and alive, like I’m pushing out all the bad feelings from my brain. Its like I’m channeling all my anger and frustration (and sometimes sadness) into dancing it all away. I can’t wait for you to hear it tomorrow. Thank you to @christineandthequeens @nooniebao @lotusiv @agcook404 & @nomakmusic for being a part of this song with me. I am so obsessed with what we have created.💗
This isn’t the first time we are hearing the song. It was performed live at the end of May at Primavera Sound in Barcelona. Charli brought on Christine and the Queens for a surprise performance that made headlines.
This new single is only one of many off of Charli’s upcoming third album. Previously dropped songs include “1999” feat. Troye Sivan and “Blame It On Your Love” feat. Lizzo.
