The drought is finally over. After years of rumours and false starts, Christina Aguilera has finally returned to her rightful spot at the top of the charts and debuted her first single and music video in years with “Accelerate.”
If there was any indication that her years out of the spotlight had quelled her drive to push the envelope, those thoughts evaporated with the first viewing of Aguilera’s new video. Ever the provocateur, Aguilera keeps her gaze fixed on the camera as she laps up milk, gets covered in honey, and performs with glitter on her face and black tape on her exposed breasts. Oh yeah, Xtina is back.
The singer, who is solo throughout the video despite featuring vocals from Ty Dolla $ign and 2 Chainz, keeps the minimalistic look we first saw in her Paper photo spread in March, with simple make up and her short blonde hair alternating between a slicked back look and soft waves.
The sexually charged single doesn’t feature Aguilera hitting any of her trademark high notes, but shows the other side of the pop diva that we love, in this case, the one that isn’t scared to play with beats and mixes, blending genres and taking chances. “Accelerate” is produced by Kanye West, who also produced a song called “Maria” on Aguilera’s upcoming album. Anderson. Paak reportedly also produced two singles and Demi Lovato performs a duet with Aguilera on the new record, with the track written by Julia Michaels.
“Accelerate” is the first single from Aguilera’s upcoming eighth studio album Liberation, which the singer announced on her Instagram account today. The new album— her first in six years following 2012’s Lotus—will drop in full on June 15 and is available for pre-order now.
