What happens when Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris write a song, and Rihanna performs it? You get a really, really catchy track. Scottish synth-pop group CHVRCHES are the latest artists to fall under the spell of the “This Is What You Came For”—covering the chart-topper while visiting the BBC’s Live Lounge this week.
Singer Lauren Mayberry brings her own emotional edge to the track, with the band switching up the synths and giving the cover their own spin. In addition to the cover, the band also performed their latest single, “Bury It.”
CHVRCHES released their sophomore album, Every Open Eye last year, a follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2013 debut. The trio dropped a superhero-inspired animated video for “Bury It” with Hayley Williams earlier this summer, and are planning to release an extended version of Every Open Eye by the end of 2016.
There’s a good chance you’ll be hearing “This Is What You Came For” this Sunday if you tune into the 2016 MTV VMAs. The song is up for three VMAs, including Song of the Summer, with the nominees for that category just announced yesterday. Rihanna is also set to perform during Sunday’s show, where she’ll accept the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.
The 2016 MTV VMAs air Sunday at 9E/6P on MTV.
