It’s been a huge week for Chvrches and it’s only Wednesday. After announcing the title and tracklist of their third studio album Love Is Dead Monday night, the band released the single “My Enemy” this afternoon. The somber track is a collaboration with The National’s frontman Matt Berninger.
Chvrches teased the collab by having Berninger appear in the video for their previously released single “Get Out.” In the video, Berninger is seen putting up posters that read “FRIEND OR FOE” followed by a toll-free phone number. Curious fans who called the number were greeted by a recorded message saying: “I’ve got no more time to hear what you think about me / Because all your words are so cold, so callous, so clean / I’ve got no more time to hear who you think we should blame / Because all your words are so vile, so vicious, so vain.” These words are actually lyrics in the new single.
In comparison to the very much pop “Get Out,” “My Enemy” is a soulful single. Berninger’s vocals are the perfect juxtaposition to frontwoman Lauren Mayberry’s light and airy voice. The toned-down backing track leaves focus on the powerfully introspective lyrics.
Love Is Dead will officially be out on May 25, though we have a feeling there’s more that Chvrches have already revealed. It’s time to go give the “Get Out” video another look.
