We’re only a few days away from the release of Coldplay’s seventh studio album A Head Full Of Dreams this Friday and what better way to promote a new record than dropping a collaboration with Beyonce?
Longtime friends Chris Martin and Beyonce team up for the first time on record with Hymn For The Weekend, a dreamy and energetic clubby track. Like the album’s first single, Adventure of a Lifetime, Coldplay are continuing to experiment with new sounds, including brass instruments on Hymn For The Weekend.
Bassist Guy Berryman debuted the song on the BBC this week and said that Beyonce recorded her vocals in only five minutes. While we are loving the juxtaposition of Martin and Bey’s vocals, we would have liked to hear more Beyonce on the collaboration. Maybe six minutes would have been better.
Berryman also said the vibe of the song is much different from where it started, with Martin wanting to write “a party song with the words ‘Drinks on me, drinks on me’. We said to him, you can’t say that. You can’t get away with that.”
Even though her vocals on the song are somewhat limited, Beyonce definitely made an impact on the band. “She’s amazing,” said Berryman. “We’re so blessed to have her sing on that song. She really transformed it.”
