12 Things That Happened Since Kanye West Released ‘The College Dropout’

Today, Kanye West’s debut album The College Dropout turns 12 years old and inches a little closer to its rebellious teenage years.

It’s been a long (and eventful!) 12 years since the world was first introduced to Kanye West, and it’s kind of weird to imagine a world without him and his influence.

Here are 12 things that have happened since The College Dropout was released on February 10, 2004.

1. He’s released 8 albums

Since 2004, Kanye has released six solo albums and two collaborative albums. In 2011, he teamed up with Jay-Z for Watch the Throne, which featured songs like Otis and No Church In The Wild with Frank Ocean.

Kanye’s seventh studio album mystery-titled album drops on February 11.

2. He was sued by Evel Knievel

In Kanye’s music video for Touch The Sky, “Evel Kanyevel” tries to fly a rocket over a canyon. Sounds pretty cool, right? Daredevil Evel Knievel didn’t think so, because he sued Kanye for trademark infringement. Knievel claimed that the video damaged his reputation because of the “vulgar” and “offensive” content.

While Kanye’s team argued that it was satire, the two settled the lawsuit shortly before Knievel’s death in 2007.

3. His mother, Donda West, passed away

Donda West, Kanye’s mother, passed away in 2007 due to heart disease and what has been cited as “multiple post-operative factors” after receiving plastic surgery. Kanye said his mother’s death was “like losing an arm and a leg and trying to walk through that.”

In 2012, Kanye announced the begnning of DONDA, a creative content company. The rapper said the company was going to “pick up where Steve Jobs left off.” DONDA has provided album artwork and designs for artists like Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz and Kanye himself, as well as taking part in three of Kanye’s music videos.

4. He got on the bad side of not one, but TWO U.S Presidents

Kanye is known for being outspoken, and this quality came through bright as day when he called out former President George W. Bush during a benefit concert for Hurricane Katrina on NBC, when he accused him of “not caring about black people.”

‘Ye’s second presidential beef was with none other than President Barack Obama. During an interview with The Atlantic in 2009, the president was pressed about Kanye taking the microphone from Taylor Swift at that year’s MTV VMAs. Obama called Kanye a “jackass,” but then said he was talented. Nice save, prez!

5. The term “Kanyed” was coined

At the 2009 MTV VMAs, Taylor Swift won Best Female Video of the year for You Belong With Me over Beyonce’s Single Ladies but Kanye was NOT happy. Storming the VMA stage, he took the microphone from Taylor and went on a tangent. “I’ma let you finish,” he started. “I’m sorry, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time!”

6. He apologized…a lot

7. YEEZY Season

Kanye’s style has evolved from bright colours and blazers to baggy neutrals. He has his own shoes, the Yeezy Boosts as well as his own clothing line with Adidas.

While the three seasons of his line have focused on men and women’s clothing, he made a special announcement regarding his target audience for Season 4.

We’ve seen North West’s unique toddler style, but what style does Kanye have in store for his son, Saint?

8. Yeezus Walks

Kanye released Yeezus in 2013. While the album received rave reviews, one song seemed to stand out against the others, I Am A God. Kanye had a pretty clear opinion about the track’s name.

9. He married Kim Kardashian

The two stars began dating in 2012 and have slowly became everyone’s #couplegoals. They welcomed their first child, North “Nori” West on June 15, 2013. Kanye and Kim got married on May 24, 2014 and had son Saint West on December 5, 2015.

10. Total Twitter domination

Whether he’s tackling the real issues like in-app purchases…

or letting people know not to bother him…

or just giving thanks…

We can all agree there is definitely gold hidden in his timeline.

11. #SWISHgate

From So Help Me God to SWISH to Waves, we are STILL unsure as to what Kanye’s newest album will be called.

We are days away from the release of this nameless album and Kanye has offered us only one hint. He said the name begins with the letters T.L.O.P. I guess we’ll have to wait and see!

12. His newest album is not album of the year. This is album of the life.
