It’s been a little under a year since we’ve heard new solo music from Demi Lovato, but the pop star put her Lovatics on notice this week that she was heading back to the recording booth.
Uploaded today, Lovato’s new single “Sorry Not Sorry” is a high energy, brash pop hit continuing with the self-empowerment theme she launched into with her 2015 single “Confident.” Sounding joyful and triumphant, Lovato shakes off the haters in her bravado-filled song, singing, “Payback is a bad bitch/And baby I’m the baddest/You fuckin with a savage/Baby, I’m sorry (I’m not sorry).” Boom. Ms. Lovato isn’t here to play.
Lovato’s “Sorry Not Sorry” is the first solo single she’s released since 2016’s “Body Say,” with Lovato lending her vocals to Cheat Code’s “No Promises” and Jax Jones’ “Instruction” earlier this year.
Demi has now shared her latest earworm on Spotify and Apple Music, while also posting a snippet from the lyric video of “Sorry Not Sorry.” The clip starts with Lovato performing the song in a recording booth before the walls fall away to reveal the pop star is on stage in front of her fans.
In addition to “Sorry Not Sorry,” Lovato also released a personal message thanking her fans for their patience while she took some time away from the spotlight.
Writing on her Instagram and Facebook feed, Lovato says that the past year started with fear that she would lose her career momentum, but instead her fans embraced Lovato’s decision to take some time for herself.
“I’ll admit, I was worried that people would get upset with me,” writes Demi in the candid and deeply personal post. “But what I saw was that instead of getting upset, literally every single one of you wrapped your arms around me and showed me how unwavering your love and support is. I’m so happy that I was able to come back to writing music more energized and inspired than ever, and to be able to give my all and more, to this new chapter.”
Lovato goes on to say that “Sorry Not Sorry” is the first of many new songs she’s been working on, likely signaling that her sixth studio album is in the works: “Sorry Not Sorry is the first of many songs that I’ve been working on, and I can’t wait for you guys to hear all of them. I hope this song makes you get off your seat and dance like you never have before. This is an anthem for anyone who’s ever been hated on and has risen above it and come out from the other side like a fucking savage!!!” She’s not sorry.
