If this season of Broad City has been giving you ’90s flashbacks, you’re not alone. After taking on The Sandlot and Sister Act earlier this season, show creators and stars Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer have now shown their love for another classic film from our childhood.
During last week’s episode, appropriately titled Burning Bridges, Abbi’s attempt to be at two dinner parties at once was a hilariously uncomfortable plot development (oh man, we *like* Trey, don’t we?), but it was also an homage to Mrs. Doubtfire.
Mara Wilson, the adorable child actor that starred as Robin Williams daughter in the 1993 film, came out of acting retirement to play Abbi’s waitress during last weeks episode. Glazer and Jacobson got in touch with the child star, who like the rest of us couldn’t say no to anything Broad City-related.
The famous dinner climax where Williams’ Mrs. Doubtfire is revealed to be a hoax was shot scene by scene, including Trey’s heroic Heimlich maneuver on Ilana’s mom and Glazer’s spot on impression of Sally Field. Let’s say it together now, “The whole time? The whole time? THE WHOLE TIME? I have to go.”
With only two episodes left in season three, we’re even more excited than ever to find out what guest stars, what ’90s movie tribute, and what new phrase the comedic duo will come up with next.
