The 2018 World Cup is only a few weeks away, and ahead of the games, the tournament’s official song has been released.
The fast paced dance tune, titled “Live It Up,” is led by reggaeton star Nicky Jam, features a rap from Will Smith, and a lush, melodic verse from Albanian vocalist Era Istrefi.
The new song has a chorus that urges “One life, live it up, cause you don’t live twice” as an up-tempo invitation to get hyped, making it the perfect high-stakes sports anthem. The song is filled with blasting horns and layers of beats that establish it as a relentless, thumping number. Nodding to the universality of the World Cup, Jam sings in both English and Spanish creating a dance track with traces of ska and reggae.
“Live It Up” follows the World Cup theme song for Brazil’s 2014 tournament “We Are One (Ole Ola)” by Pitbull and South Africa’s mega popular track “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” by Shakira in 2010. The new track is not to be confused with Jaosn Derulo’s “Colors” which is serving as Coca-Cola’s promotional anthem for the World Cup.
The FIFA World Cup is the biggest single-event sporting competition in the world. For the past three years, senior men’s national soccer teams have battled it out in the qualification phase to earn a coveted spot in the tournament. This year, 32 teams from across the world will meet in Russia where only one team will leave as the 2018 FIFA World Cup champions.
