Since 2007, American producer DJ Earworm has taken the top 25 pop songs of the year and seamlessly blended the past 12 months into a five-minute piece that somehow totally works. Last December, Earworm released 2015’s instalment in the “United States of Pop” mashup as “50 Shades Of Pop.” Now, Earworm is heating up the summer months with a new mashup, combining the biggest songs so far of 2016 into “Summersmash 16.”
In only a few short months, the pop landscape has shifted artists, a move that is most noticeable when Earworm’s 2015 “50 Shades of Pop” is contrasted with this month’s release. While “50 Shades of Pop” featured Justin Bieber, Drake, Shawn Mendes, The Weeknd, Adele, Taylor Swift, OMI, Walk The Moon and Tove Lo, to name a few, this time around he’s shining more of the spotlight on the ladies.
Rihanna, Beyonce, Fifth Harmony, Zara Larsson, Daya, Bebe Rexha and Rihanna (again) are heavily featured in the new mashup, along with Desiigner, Zayn, Lukas Graham, Justin Timberlake, Twenty One Pilots and more. DNCE’s “Cake By The Ocean” is still topping the charts even though it’s approaching its one year mark and of course, a “Summersmash 16” mashup wouldn’t be complete without Drake’s “Summer 16.”
