Drake, Shawn Mendes And The Weeknd Lead 2017 JUNO Awards Nominations

Drake, Shawn Mendes and The Weeknd will all duke it out at this year’s JUNO Awards, with each artist leading with five nominations apiece. Drake, Mendes and The Weeknd all overlap in Single of the Year, Album of the Year and JUNO Fan Choice category nominations, which were announced this morning from Toronto.

Last year, The Weeknd was the big winner, taking home four of his six nominations.

Trailing closely behind is Alessia Cara with four nominations for Single of the Year, Artist of the Year, Pop Album of the Year and JUNO Fan Choice. Last year, in addition to performing at the show, she took the hardware for Breakthrough Artist of the Year.

Cara will be returning to take the JUNO stage again at this year’s ceremony alongside electronic group A Tribe Called Red, Vine star Ruth B and alt-rockers The Strumbellas.

The late Leonard Cohen, who passed away last November, is also being honoured with four nominations for Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and Adult Alternative Album of the Year.

The Tragically Hip earned multiple nominations as well, with frontman Gord Downie receiving separate nominations for his solo project, Secret Path.

2016 Polaris Prize winner Kaytranada garnered three nominations for Electronic Album of the Year, Video of the Year and Breakthrough Artist of the Year.

The 2017 JUNO Awards take place on Sunday, April 2 and will broadcast live on CTV and CTV GO from Ottawa’s Canadian Tire Centre.
