Watch Harry Styles Shed His Boy Band Persona In First Official ‘Dunkirk’ Trailer

All of the One Direction members are still keeping busy after the band’s break up, but so far, Harry Styles is the only one trying his hand at acting with a role in the upcoming battle film, Dunkirk. Today, the first official trailer for the movie is here, and it shows us a completely different Harry than the one we’re used to.

Dunkirk, which also stars Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road), Cillian Murphy (Inception) and Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies), chronicles the true story of Operation Dynamo, which was the British effort to rescue hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers (including Canadians) from the Dunkirk port after it was invaded by Germans during World War II. The operation lasted from May 27 to June 4th in 1940 and is known to be one of the most daring feats in military history.

Whether or not the history aspect interests you, we’ve rounded some Harry moments from the new Dunkirk trailer.

Here’s Harry in one scene, sitting on the beach with his fellow soldiers.

Here he is in another, in a bunker with his guard up.

And here he is again, seeming to be drowning. Wait, WHAT?!

He’s in too much distress for someone with a life jacket on—but we’re going to wait for the film to come out, and hope for the best.

From the curly-haired boy who told us what makes us beautiful, we didn’t necessarily expect an appearance in a gritty war film. But the trailer is intense, and shows us a new side of the boy band heartthrob that we could definitely get on board with. Given that the film’s director Christopher Nolan has also made critically-acclaimed films like Interstellar, Inception, and the Dark Knight trilogy, we have a feeling that Dunkirk, and Harry, are going to deliver.

Dunkirk hits theatres on July 21st, 2017.
