It’s official – Ed Sheeran is back. After a week of teases and clues on social media, Ed Sheeran has ended his self-imposed hiatus and returned with new music. Yasssss 2017!
Sheeran teased two new pieces of music yesterday. which sounded like different songs, and that’s exactly what they were. Tweeting, “Cause I’ve been away for a bit here’s two singles rather than one,” Sheeran dropped the autobiographical “Castle On the Hill” and sexy “Shape Of You.”
Lyric videos were released for both songs, which are in line with Sheeran’s previous work, but show growth lyrically and musically. Sheeran shows that he can still make us dance with the sultry and slinky “Shape Of You,” a feat he achieved on x with “Sing” and “Don’t.”
Releasing another reflective coming-of-age song (think an upbeat “Photograph”), Sheeran picks up his trusty acoustic guitar for “Castle On The Hill,” which is more heavily produced than what we’re used to hearing from Ed, but still maintains the honesty and reliability that has gained him millions of fans. A love song for Sheeran’s childhood friends, the lyrics are comprised of first kisses, memories of drinking together, reflecting on where everyone has ended up in adulthood and returning home after years away. It really delivers on *all* the feels.
In addition to the two new songs, Sheeran also sat down for an interview with the BBC and shared insights on how he spent 2016 and what’s in store for the new year. Here’s what we learned.
Ed has been preparing for his return to music. When his songs “Sing” and “Don’t” recently came on the radio, Sheeran realized he couldn’t remember his own lyrics and spent a day re-learning his music.
His third album was initially supposed to be released in September 2016, but he decided to wait four months to avoid being lost with all the albums released at Christmas.
“Castle On The Hill” was written in 2015 as a love song for Suffolk. The video has already been shot in Suffolk, using kids from Ed’s high school, including a leading actor who looks just like Sheeran.
He has promised that his third album is coming, but won’t say when it will arrive.
By the way, that album will be called ÷.
Ed has no problem talking about a listening party he held for the some of the cast of Game of Thrones to get their take on his new music. What he does have a problem speaking about is his recent injury that resulted in a scar on his cheek. We’re sure the last thing a good Englishman wants to do is upset the Royal Family.
“Shape of You” was written for Rihanna, but when she passed Ed suggested it for Rudimental. Eventually his record label told him to sing it himself.
Sheeran played coy when asked about headlining Glastonbury and having a ‘massive guestlist.’
