The man who has been writing wedding reception music for years announced this week that he too is now engaged. Ed Sheeran posted a picture on his Instagram account this weekend announcing that he and girlfriend Cherry Seaborn got engaged over the holidays. Aw true love.
The pair have been dating since 2015, but their relationship began much earlier. Let’s take a look back at a timeline of love from the man who writes all the love songs.
Sheeran and Seaborn met when they were only 11 and attended the same high school in Suffolk, England. Sheeran of course left early to pursue his music career in the U.S., with Seaborn graduating and going on to play hockey for Duke University, where she earned a degree in Molecular Biology.
After spending years apart, Sheeran and Seaborn reportedly reconnected when Sheeran was in New York for a series of concerts in 2015. Seaborn was working on Wall Street at the time and the pair met up at Sheeran’s shows. A few months later, Sheeran was in Rhode Island to attend friend Taylor Swift’s famous Fourth of July party and Seaborn was also in town. Sheeran asked Swift whether he could invite a friend to the party, with the weekend marking the couple’s unofficial anniversary. One year later, Swift posted a picture at her Fourth of July party announcing Sheeran and Seaborn’s one year anniversary.
Following the success of Sheeran’s second album Multiply, Seaborn left her job to travel the world for a year with Sheeran. After Sheeran ditched his phone at the beginning of 2016, the couple traveled to Iceland, Japan, and more before returning to the U.K. for Sheeran to record Divide. “This has been the first time I’ve actually had the time to fall in love properly,” Sheeran told Zane Lowe last January. “So the catalyst of taking a year off was also the fact that my partner quit her job in New York—which she’s now got back in London, which is really cool—but we were just basically like, let’s quit our jobs and have a year of forming a tight bond. So we went traveling and spent every day for a year together.”
It’s unclear when the two moved in together, but Sheeran has spoken at length about the pair co-habituating in England with their two cats, Calipo and Dorito.
Sheeran confirmed to Ellen DeGeneres that his latest single “Perfect” was not only the first song written for his 2017 album Divide, but also inspired by Seaborn. Welp, that’s a pretty good anniversary gift.
If Sheeran had any lingering doubts that Seaborn was the one, they were likely squashed when he broke his arms last year. His girlfriend was on hand to help him get around and even brushed his teeth for him. That’s true love.
