Ed Sheeran and The Weeknd teamed up for the Toronto native’s 2015 album Beauty Behind The Madness on the song “Dark Times,” reuniting once more at the Grammy Awards this past weekend where they both performed. Now the singers are again sharing the same idea, with both The Weeknd and Sheeran celebrating birthdays this week and dropping new music to get the party started.
Turning 27 yesterday, The Weeknd debuted his star-studded music video for “Reminder” off 2016’s Starboy. As for Sheeran, the British singer turns 26 today and to celebrate, released the song “How Would You Feel (Paean)” from his upcoming third studio album Divide.
The new track is a simple yet touching love song, much simpler in arrangement than “Castle On The Hill” and “Shape Of You,” the first two releases from Divide. Sheeran has uploaded a live version of “How Would You Feel (Paean)” on his YouTube page featuring himself with his guitar and a piano player, but the studio version, which is available on Spotify, includes a John Mayer-esque guitar breakdown that adds an added layer of interest.
Sheeran has been busy promoting Divide and told Ryan Seacrest during an interview this week that “How Would You Feel (Paean)” almost didn’t make the album. “I said to my girlfriend, ‘What’s your favourite song on the album?’ She said, ‘You’ve forgotten it existed. I’ve got it in my email.’ She was the only one I had sent it to. She picked it out from, like, a year and a half ago. Then I ended up recording it.”
Ed also noted that the song won’t be an official single, but simply a song he loves and wanted to promote before the album’s release.
We’re not surprised that Sheeran’s longtime girlfriend Cherie chose the emotional ballad “How Would You Feel (Paean)” as her favourite. Picking up where the Grammy winning “Thinking Out Loud” left off, lyrics like, “How would you feel / If I told you I loved you / It’s just something that I want to do / I’m taking my time, spending my life / Falling deeper in love with you / So tell me that you love me too” will ensure that the soaring love song will be played at every wedding reception for the next decade.
Yesterday’s new line up release for the 2017 iHeartRadio Music Awards included Ed, who will perform alongside Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, Shawn Mendes, The Chainsmokers and more. The iHeartRadio Music Awards will air live on Sunday, March 5 at 8 p.m. on CTV Two. Sheeran is also scheduled to perform at the 2017 Brit Awards, airing Wednesday, February 22 at 8 p.m. ET on Much.
We may see Ed performing “How Would You Feel (Paean)” at the iHeartRadio Music Awards, or during his Carpool Karaoke segment with James Corden. Sheeran confirmed earlier this year that he would be appearing on the famous viral series in 2017 and was recently spotted filming with Corden.
Ed Sheeran’s third studio album Divide is available now for pre-order and set to be released on March 3.
Watch Ed Sheeran return to the Brit Awards stage tomorrow with a live stream of the 2017 Brit Awards starting at 2:30 pm ET on YouTube. The 2017 Brit Awards will also air on Much at 8ET/5PT.
