Ed Sheeran Announces New Music And Here’s Everything We Know

We’re calling it – 2017 is going to be the year of Ed Sheeran. The British singer started the new year off with a huge announcement, making his official return to social media.

Sheeran posted a nine-second silent video, holding up a piece of paper that reads ‘New music coming Friday!!’. Sheeran doesn’t speak in the clip, instead ending the video with a smile, biting the piece of paper.

Hello 2017…

The announcement comes three weeks after Ed Sheeran made a soft return to social media, changing the profile image on all his accounts to a teal blue colour. Considering Sheeran’s first two albums had strong solid colour schemes, this unexplained profile change quickly led to new-album speculation.

It’s also worthwhile to note that Sheeran released his groundbreaking debut album + in 2011 and his award-winning follow-up X in 2014, making 2017 the ideal time to continue his tradition of a three-year gap between albums.

Although Sheeran has taken a year off from music and social media, he hasn’t been quietly sitting at home the entire time. The 24 year-old is known for drawing inspiration for his lyrics from his personal life and even with his social media sabbatical, we can still make a few educated guesses about what’s in store for Sheeran 3.0.

1. The Royal Scar

Sheeran endured a very British injury in 2016 when a mock-knighting between Princess Beatrice and Sheeran’s friend and fellow singer James Blunt ended with Sheeran in the ER. Expect at least one ‘she cut me like a knife to the cheek’ line in 2017.

2. Taylor Swift + Ed Sheeran = BFFs

Sheeran’s friend and collaborator Taylor Swift also self-imposed a hiatus from her professional life in 2016, but returned to the studio with Jack Antonoff and Zayn Malik to record “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” for the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack. We would love to see Sheeran and Swift in the studio together again. No stranger to film soundtracks (The Fault In Our Stars, The Hobbit), we also wouldn’t be surprised to learn Friday’s piece of new music is also for the upcoming Fifty Shades Darker film.

3. Carpool Karaoke

James Corden is one of the many Sheeran fans excited about Friday’s new music, sending out a tweet following Sheeran’s announcement.

Considering the chemistry between the two longtime friends and Sheeran’s history of extensive promo for his albums, we’re wondering whether there’s a new Carpool Karaoke segment in the near future for the two Brits. We can only hope.

4. One Direction Connection

Ed Sheeran has famously written for a number of pop music’s biggest artists, including boy band One Direction. Now that the four-piece is on a hiatus and pursuing solo careers, we’d love to see Sheeran collaborating once again with Liam, Louis, Harry or Niall…or even Zayn. We still kinda count him as a member.

5. New Sound Influences

During a recent performance for Princess Kate’s charity, Sheeran joked about playing his first gig in a year and traveling through Japan in 2016, which could definitely influence his sound. Working with Pharrell and Rick Rubin on his second album, Sheeran is an artist that continues to evolve, which makes Friday’s upcoming release even more exciting.

6. New Interview

Why was Sheeran mic’d in his video announcing new music coming Friday when he was silent in the video? Could this signal new music on Friday as well as a new interview or album/tour announcement?
