Just a little over a week after releasing the nostalgia-filled music video for “Castle On The Hill,” Ed Sheeran is back with another video from his upcoming third studio album Divide.
Originally written for Rihanna, Sheeran dropped “Shape of You” on the same day as “Castle On the Hill” earlier in January. The new video shows the tatted up singer-songwriter displaying some impressive boxing skills and using a few of the moves he picked up during his dance training from “Thinking Out Loud.”
The video stars Sheeran as an aspiring boxer who falls in love with another amateur boxer at his gym, played by actor and dancer Jennie Pegouskie. After Pegouskie accidentally hits Sheeran with the door of her locker, adding yet another new scar to the singers’ face, the two quickly fall in love and act out scenes from “Shape of You,” including eating in a diner and kissing in a cab.
The pair also show off some impressive side-by-side boxing moves, train together and throw enough punches to help Sheeran keep off his recent 50 pound weight loss.
Pegouskie’s character eventually decides she must move on and follow her heart to another gym, leaving behind a picture and her Divide mouth guard for Sheeran to find. Sheeran uses his heartbreak to fuel his training and eventually comes face to face with Pegouskie at her new gym.
Unfortunately, the video was going really well up to this point. One of Sheeran’s best, in fact. But the serious, gritty, and sexy video takes an unnecessary oddball tour when Sheeran’s boxing training leads him to an underground match with sumo wrestler Yama. Wait, what?
Now Sheeran is in a sumo suit, running around the ring trying to avoid someone who is certainly in a different weight class, until he’s eventually rescued by Pegouskie, who transforms from a boxer to a martial artist with one kick. Again, what? Was this part necessary?
Sheeran posted four pics from the set of “Shape of You,” including one image this morning showing the English singer behind the camera with rapper Macklemore and director Jason Koenig. The video was shot in Macklemore’s hometown of Seattle by Koenig, who has worked with Macklmore & Ryan Lewis on a number of their videos, including “Can’t Hold Us” and “Downtown.”
Pegouskie also represents another connection to Macklemore. The “Shape of You” leading lady has been a part of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ touring dance group for over three years, including performing in the duo’s video for “Downtown” and dancing with the group at the 2016 iHeartRadio MMVAs.
Sheeran and Macklemore have worked together a number of times, including their performance of”Same Love” at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas in 2014 and writing “Growing Up (Sloane’s Song)” together in 2015.
In addition to the new video for “Shape Of You,” Sheeran also recently released the first set of dates for the European leg of his upcoming tour.
Ed Sheeran’s third studio album Divide will be released on March 3.
