If you’ve been on Instagram lately, you’ve most likely seen a new icon on your dashboard. And if you look closer, you can see a white outline of a TV with what looks like a squiggle in the centre. This is IGTV.
The app, launched on June 20, is Instagram’s latest feature and standalone product which allows its users to post vertical long-form videos that can go up to an hour. Like your Instagram stories, but without the 15-second restriction. The simple interface also allows us to watch 4K videos that fill up our entire screen, giving us a close-up and intimate look at our favourite creators. If you’re curious about the new platform, read on for everything you need to know about IGTV.
This is the fun part. Literally, anything (within the Instagram guidelines, of course). The app is a blank canvas and is waiting for users to make something out of it, whether it be for your art or for your finsta, it’s totally up to you—the IGTV world is your oyster.
It does sound a lot similar to another video streaming platform, doesn’t it? But…the app puts a priority on mobile users as its formatted for the natural way we hold our phones. Meaning, no more awkward re-positioning while alternating from iMessage to video.
The app won’t have a search option, instead, sections such as “For You,” or “Popular,” will be displayed on the bottom of the screen which users can scroll through while watching videos, similar to the explore page Instagram has.
Hot take… In one year #IGTV will be a legitimate competitor to Youtube.

Instagram has evolved immensely since its 2010 launch. We’ve seen many changes with the app, some good, some bad (please bring back chronological order, we’re begging you). IGTV is a complete game-changer for content creators looking to try something new. It’s also proven to be the perfect time to do so. With the combination of YouTube videos mostly being watched on mobile, and a billion users now on Instagram, IGTV provides us with the perfect opportunity to create and experiment with video content on one of the most popular, established apps in the world.
Creators will also be able to use IGTV to make money through sponsorships, similar to how Youtubers make revenue. So if you’re looking to make some extra dough, IGTV could be for you.
Celebrities such as Selena Gomez, Kim Kardashian and Kevin Hart have already starred on the app, as well as Instagram influencers such as Lele Pons, who will be releasing her new cooking show on IGTV.
Nope. IGTV is readily available for those with IOS and Android devices. Happy creating!
