We didn’t think any movie could be more dramatic, romantic, or scandalous than 2015’s Fifty Shades of Grey (or the 2011 book on which it’s based). But Fifty Shades Freed, the third instalment in the wildly popular Fifty Shades franchise, may give the original film a run for its money.
A brand new Fifty Shades Freed trailer dropped on New Year’s Day (during the Season 22 premiere of The Bachelor, fittingly), and there’s a lot to break down. First of all, Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) and Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) are newly married and blissfully in love. Grey, as per usual, is taking it upon himself to shower Ana with expensive gifts, including a new car, a house, and an impromptu weekend trip. Nothing new there.
Ana, on the other hand, is no longer just Ana—she’s Mrs. Grey, a more poised and assertive version of her former college grad self. In the trailer, she clearly and confidently informs Christian that being married to him doesn’t mean she’ll listen to or obey everything he says. She also politely but firmly asks Christian’s touchy-feely architect, Gia Matteo (Arielle Kebbel, who you might recognize from Gilmore Girls or The Vampire Diaries) to stop “speaking to my husband as if I weren’t here.” Say what you will about her relationship with Christian, but Ana’s clearly come a long way from the timid, awkward English lit student of shades past.
The trailer presents us with a few obligatory snippets of Ana and Christian lovingly staring into each others’ eyes, but it abruptly takes a dark turn when Ana gets a disturbing call from Jack Hyde, her former boss. Ana pulls out a gun and later points it at an unspecified target—presumably Jack, but could it be someone else? Christian also punches someone in the face while he and Ana are at a club and accompanies Ana during an unexpected car chase. Maybe the Fifty Shades writers picked up a thing or two while watching The Fast and the Furious.
The biggest surprise of the trailer happens approximately five seconds before it ends, after the title card and before the release date. Ana is apparently pregnant, which some viewers may find shocking—neither Ana nor Christian hinted at or talked about having children in Fifty Shades of Grey or Fifty Shades Darker. On the other hand, this was bound to happen sooner or later, right? The Greys actually have two children in E.L. James’ book series. Plus, Ana and Christian are based on Twilight’s Bella and Edward, who eventually became parents themselves.
Fifty Shades Freed, which cruises into theatres on February 9 (aka the Friday before Valentine’s Day) features Johnson and Dornan as well as newcomers Tyler Hoechlin (Teen Wolf) and Brant Daugherty (Pretty Little Liars). Check out the trailer below.
