From Behinds To Man Braids: These Moments Defined Our Style in 2014

This has been an unusual year for fashion. And we mean that in a good way. Men experimented with hair trends, a reality television star became the hottest new model and a beautiful newcomer with Mexican and Kenyan citizenship was the face of glamour. Two of our biggest moments of the year are about headgear. That has to be a first.

We took a look at what got people talking in the the world of style this year and picked the biggest moments. Check them out.

Butts, Butts, Butts

This year, the backside was at the forefront. Booties have been a worshipped asset for years but this year they had their biggest moment. Twerking may have had a big year last year but that didn’t meant that butts would disappear in 2014. Iggy Azalea and J. Lo (the godmother of booties) sang an homage to the bottom in the song simply “Booty”. The ying yang-ing of their behinds is quite hypnotising. And shall we not forget the magazine cover that almost broke the internet, Paper magazine featuring Kim Kardashian. Now that is one good advertisement for baby oil. But the greatest tribute to the rear end since, appropriately “Baby Got Back”, was the music video for “Anaconda”. We will all always remember the first time we saw that music video. May 2015 be the year of the interesting personality. haha JK!

Experimentations In Man Hair

This year, many famous men decided to ditch the cropped cuts for a more interesting look. Carrying on a trend from last year, men from Orlando Bloom to Chris Hemsworth sported the controversial man bun that you can spot all over down town Toronto streets. Jared Leto got people talking after he appeared at the Oscar Awards sporting a very hip white suit and beautiful, long, ombre locks. If only our girl hair looked that good. Bieber also changed things up with a platinum do and Robert Pattinson tried our a different cut, leaving only a little band aid sized strip of hair around the nape of his neck.

But the male hair that really blew up Twitter was sported by Cary Fukunaga, the director of True Detective. When he hit the stage at the Emmy Awards to accept his award for best directing, he was rocking the most beautiful pair of braids to ever be braided. Although the look didn’t take off among us regular people, we kind of hope that 2015 will be the year of the man-braid. No?

The End of Ciara and Future

This particular fashion moment from 2014 is one that hits our hearts personally. You may have heard the news that the most attractive couple in the world broke up in August. Ciara and Future called it quits after he allegedly cheated on her. They also just have a baby. And that baby’s name is Future. Oh what could have been

We are highly supportive of anyone getting out of a bad relationship. And who are we to speculate about the details of the break-up? But, what does make us sad is that we will no longer have the creative, artistic and sartorial genius that was the two of them together. We’re sure that will both go on to live happy equally as fashionable lives but now is the time to reflect on what was. The perfectly paired, ombre duo of Future and Ciara. From her jaw dropping bejewelled gown and his patchwork suit at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2013 to her cool and causal maternity style paired with his street style, these two were a match made in high fashion heaven.

May they keep up inspiring us all through their music and fashion, although separately. For the good of them both.

Half Human, Half Cat Ariana Grande

Meow. 2014 brought us the human/kitten hybrid that is Ariana Grande. Rarely seen without a mini A-line skirt. Rarely seen without a high pony tail. And most notably, rarely seen without kitten ears. This is a trend that has been seen on other celebs like Taylor Swift but was taken to new heights by Ariana Grande. They made an appearance in most of her televised performances, in her personal Instagram selfies and in her video for “Love Me Harder” featuring The Weeknd. She probably has a whole extra closet just for her feline headbands. She has a bunch.

The Rise of Supermodel Kendall Jenner

It may be easy to say that Kendall Jenner only became a supermodel because of her famous family. But, we would like to take a position vehemently against that idea. This girl really has what it takes. The second youngest daughter of the Kardashian/Jenner clan, has the body, the face, the blank slate beauty that works in any setting and most importantly that special something. She also has an incredible eye for high fashion. Did you see her first MMVA dress? Day-um. This year along, Kendall appeared in runway shows for Marc Jacobs, Givency, Chanel, Donna Karan, Dian Von Furstenberg, Fendi, Pucci, Donce & Gabbana, Balmain, Sonia Rykiel and Tommy Hilfiger. She was also named the new global face of Estee Lauder following in the footsteps of women like Gwyneth Paltrow and Elizabeth Hurley. We have a feeling Kendall’s career will only be getting bigger in 2015.

The Award Show Dominance of Lupita Nyong’o

Could we pick the biggest fashion moments of 2014 without mentioning Luptia Nyong’o? No, we could not. She is, according to People magazine, the Most Beautiful Person, and we have to agree. The breakout star of 12 Years A Slave became the one that everyone was waiting for on awards show red carpets for good reason. She played with colour better than anyone else this year and that red cape dress is probably our favourite look of 2014. And come on. That face. So beautiful. Plus, that isn’t even mentioning her charm, poise, smarts, humour and cool as heck brother.

Lupita is starring in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so you can bet that we will be seeing more of her incredible red carpet looks. Maybe some of Rodarte’s Star Wars line from this year?

Taylor Swift’s Midriff

Taylor Swift barely wore an outfit this year that didn’t expose us to her new favourite body part, her midriff. From her gorgeous green American Music Award dress to her first picture with Olivia Benson, her flat tummy made very frequent appearances.

It even inspired a Buzzfeed article breaking down everything we know about her midriff.

But, you may notice that this isn’t an early-Britney belly button ring exposing midriff. This is a classy midriff. Taylor explained why to Lucky magazine. “I don’t like showing my belly button. When you start showing your belly button then you’re really committing to the midriff thing. I only partially commit to the midriff thing — you’re only seeing lower rib cage,” Taylor said.

We are totally on board with that. Although it is starting to get chilly in New York, famously her new home, she is still rocking the midriff baring look, even at her birthday party this past weekend.

Pharrell Makes a Big Statement

The hat that launched a thousand memes.

No, the most talked about fashion statement of the 2014 Grammy’s wasn’t the suit and cane worn by Madonna. Nor was it the musical note patterned dress worn by Katy Perry. It was a hat. Specifically a big, brown, wide-brimmed hat worn by Pharrell Williams. The memes came fast and furious. From comparisons to the Arby’s hat (obvs) to Harry Potter’s sorting hat to a Mountie’s hat, the Internet got very excited. Grumpy cat even sported a mini version at the MTV Movie Awards.

But, the hat actually had some interesting roots. It is a vintage chapeau from the Fall-Winter 1982-1983 Vivienne Westwood collection and was inspired by Malcolm McLaren and the Rock Steady Crew’s style in their video “Buffalo Gals”. Pharrell also first wore the hat back in 2009 but it didn’t get attention until he hit the Grammy red carpet this year. The hat was on display at the Newseum, the Washington, DC museum dedicated to journalism.

Long may we worship the fashion symbol of 2014.

Cool Girl Style From FKA twigs

FKA Twigs became the face, quite literally, of alt-girl style in 2014 thanks to her incredibly creative music videos, album cover and fashion choices. The English pop singer… well how do we even begin to describe her style? Her most recognisable attributes are her artistically styled front baby hairs and her colourful pout. Her style is a little bit Selena, a little bit Aaliyah and clearly takes cues from the backgrounds of her Jamaican father and Spanish mother. Above anything else though, it is just FKA twigs. Her face was propelled to the mainstream once she started dating Robert Pattinson. If anything though, we hope that this high profile relationship will turn more people on to both FKA Twigs’ music and her tres cool style.
