When we heard that halftime headliners Coldplay would be joined at Super Bowl 50 by Beyoncé and Bruno Mars, we were first excited, then a bit confused by how it would all work. That’s a lot of different genres in one spot. But it did more than work. It moved. Yup, we were moved.
The show was kicked off by Coldplay and a chorus of kids and string instruments, making the violin look super cool. Dancers with giant flowers filled the field and brought to life the colourful look the band has maintained for the past few years, making the California stadium come alive.
After an uplifting medley of Yellow, Paradise, Viva La Vida and Adventure of a Lifetime, Lead singer Chris Martin then threw things over to Bruno Mars, who was joined on stage by producer Mark Ronson and the Hooligans to perform their monster hit Uptown Funk, complete with new choreography and matching black suits. Now those are some #SquadGoal moves.
Not to be outdone, Beyoncé and her formation of ladies literally took the field, performing Bey’s new single Formation on the turf. Showing what a pro she truly is and catching herself mid-fall, Beyoncé gave one of fiercest performances to date before joining Mars and Coldplay on stage for a sing-off that made us all winners for getting to watch. Let’s be honest; it takes an ENTIRE football stadium to hold all the coolness emanating off Beyoncé and Bruno Mars. You too, Coldplay. You guys did great.
But what did it feel like to actually be at the Super Bowl tonight and even perform during the halftime show? Let’s find out.
Coldplay shared some backstage pictures before heading out to the field.
The colourful paper held by fans looked like a cool backdrop to the upbeat performance.
But we had no idea how cool a few pieces of paper could look until Coldplay finished the halftime show with this message.
Special guest Bruno Mars shared a few snaps of the stage during rehearsals, giving fans a sneak peek at the colourful stage in store.
Beyonce went one step further and shared videos of the road to the halftime show, literally. Bey posted clips of the singer with her dancers on their bus and in rehearsal.
In this video, one of Beyonce’s dancers talks about performing with the superstar, explaining that dancing with Beyonce means “….going full out every time. You know why? Because she’s going full out.”
Only seconds after getting off stage, Beyonce shared pictures from the performance on her social media accounts, including this stunning shot.
The end of the halftime show concluded with a commercial featuring Beyonce’s Formation Tour announcement. The 40-date tour will kick off April 27 and cover the US and Canada, as well as the UK and Europe. Specific tour dates should be announced shortly with tickets going on sale February 15.
